Job Title: Digital Communications Specialist

Supervisor’s Title: Senior Manager, Media Relations

Summary

The Digital Communications Specialist manages National PTA’s social media assets. This position is directly responsible for the development and execution of social media strategies to improve member awareness and engagement in National PTA programs and initiatives. The specialist also writes and edits articles, blog posts and media materials; manages photography projects and supports communications planning and media outreach. This role requires the Digital Communications Specialist to collaborate with department and other staff members, PTA volunteers and leadership, consultants, sponsors and vendors. 

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development and implementation of social media strategies
  • Manage social media assets, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube
  • Create graphics for social media
  • Write, edit and manage content for the One Voice blog
  • Monitor, analyze and report social media metrics
  • Write articles to contribute to media partners, including Mediaplanet and PBS Parents
  • Assist with the development of media materials, including pitches, news releases, media advisories, statements and op-eds as well as talking points and Q&A resources
  • Support media outreach
  • Manage photography projects with support from consultants and vendors, including photo shoots, photo galleries and slideshows
  • Support communications and marketing planning
  • Support website postings of news releases and other media-related content
  • Educate staff and volunteers on digital communications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, advocacy or marketing
  • At least three years of experience as a communications professional, preferred
  • Experience contracting with and managing consultants and vendors, preferred
  • Experience working for a nonprofit or advocacy-focused organization, preferred

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Superior writing and editing skills; knowledge of AP style
  • Evolving mastery of social media platforms
  • Working experience with HTML and content management systems as well as desktop publishing software
  • Ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, work environment
  • Proven experience working with limited budgets and demanding deadlines
  • Team player with good listening skills and “can-do” attitude
  • Ability to collaborate with employees and volunteers with tact and efficiency
  • Self-motivated; strives for flawless execution and researches new techniques
  • Excellent organization, presentation and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel out of state for business meetings 1-3 times each year
