AFAR Media, the most critically acclaimed travel media company, is looking for a New York-based Events Director to oversee the strategy and activation of all AFAR events. This role will report to the Vice President of Marketing and will be responsible for the many facets of AFAR events, including: strategy, production, sponsorships, budgeting, content generation, and post-event follow-up. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Create and execute unique consumer and trade event concepts
  • Strategize on-brand event themes, programming, and speaker line-ups to be approved by internal stakeholders (sales/marketing/edit/etc) and partners
  • Oversee and manage all event components, including but not limited to venue, run of show, speakers, guest lists, floor planning, d├ęcor, contracts, budget.  
  • Partner with AFAR Designer to brainstorm and project manage branding and designs as needed
  • Work in partnership with the sales and marketing teams to create, prospect, sell, and activate unique sponsorship opportunities that drive revenue for each event 
  • Create event proposals, campaign recaps, and other marketing materials to generate sponsorships
  • Develop and execute a content strategy for each event, in partnership with AFAR Branded Content Director
  • Conduct venue and vendor research, and manage contracting, negotiation (including barter and paid), and venue/vendor activation
  • Work with venues and catering partners to create on-brand food and beverage menus to meet the needs of each unique event  
  • Identify, negotiate, and manage transportation vendors and logistics as needed
  • Create event marketing and promotional materials to drive attendance, in partnership with AFAR designer
  • Manage all sponsor and partner communications
  • Create and manage all production schedules to meet all internal and external deadlines
  • Manage all attendee outreach, RSVPs, guest lists, and attendee follow up
  • Manage each event budget and oversee invoice reconciliation, in partnership with the AFAR Finance department
  • Create post-event recaps for print, digital, and social channels, in partnership with AFAR designer  

Required Skills:

  • The successful candidate will have experience and proven track record in event management with a minimum of 5 years experience
  • Strong project management skills
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office and Adobe programs within a Mac environment
  • Must be a creative and strategic thinker
  • Strong writing and communication skills are a must
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Must be highly organized with fine attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment
