The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Communications Director. This is a unique opportunity to help lead a dynamic and high-achieving non-profit public relations and marketing team as it works to significantly increase HRF's global profile and share our advocacy with new communities. This position reports directly to the Chief Strategy Officer, and will develop, implement, and coordinate a strategic communications plan that supports HRF’s fundraising, constituency building, and advocacy objectives. 


Public Relations

  • Regularly secure placement for HRF articles, scholarly works and opinion pieces in popular television, radio, print, and web outlets
  • Call and email reporters and editors on a daily basis to inform them of HRF’s work, pitch stories, and share activities
  • Draft press releases, talking points, board memos, op-eds, and social media content that reflect HRF’s positions, projects, and achievements
  • Identify breaking news stories where HRF can support human rights activists in crisis
  • Work with Norway-based communications staff to improve the regional profile of the Oslo Freedom Forum
  • Establish targets of success on a quarterly basis with specific measurable results in terms of publications reached, quotations in newspapers, feature stories written
  • Research and secure placement for HRF staff with regard to panels and keynote addresses at conferences and other relevant gatherings
  • Identify and develop key journalists--in the U.S. and abroad--working in the human rights and anti-corruption space
  • Manage a daily HRF media round-up for staff and supporters


  • Regularly attend events in New York and beyond to raise HRF’s profile and promote our work
  • Create partnerships in New York, San Francisco, and other cities to help grow our community
  • Use email marketing software to create and send e-letters, press releases, and event updates to our networks
  • Develop and manage a daily social media plan for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, YouTube and other platforms involving the use of both scheduled posts and real-time reaction to unfolding news
  • Manage the drafting, editing, and updating of HRF web content
  • Assist with the Oslo Freedom Forum program team to best empower HRF allies, HRF programs, and HRF activities
  • Help draft development documents including annual reports, conference brochures, media packs, and donor materials
  • Ensure quality of HRF marketing content in print and on web by copyediting, proofreading, ensuring consistent style and brand implementation
  • Oversee the maintenance of an archive of all reports and HRF materials for historical and internal purposes
  •  The communications specialist will possess the ability to prioritize projects and tasks, meet multiple deadlines, and monitor several projects simultaneously. The position requires superb organizational skills with an interest in improving and streamlining process and systems. The candidate must be outgoing and highly detail-oriented with top-notch creative writing skills and an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • A strong understanding of and affinity for HRF's mission
  • A passion for human rights, political freedom, and civil liberties
  • A firm understanding of today’s media landscape and a knowledge of how news is produced in web, print, radio, television, and social media formats
  • The ability to make well-informed decisions in targeting appropriate media outlets and reporters
  • Attention to detail, a commitment to deadlines, and grace under pressure
  • Strong skills working in teams and across many types of organizations – collaborator; problem solver; relationship-builder; and strong interpersonal skills
  • Stress tolerance, resilience, and a sense of humor
  • The ability to work under pressure with multiple and shifting priorities
  • 2 years of experience in communications, journalism, corporate strategy, or public relations is preferable
  • A strong following on social media is preferred
  • A personal network of journalists interested in politics and current events is preferred
  • A Bachelor's or advanced degree in international relations or similar field, journalism, or communications is preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish, French, German, Norwegian, or Korean would be an advantage
  • Experience with software like Meltwater and MailChimp is preferred
  • An understanding that this job requires long hours, including, nights and weekends
