WPIX-TV (PIX11 News) is looking for a summer intern to play a key role in the television station’s archives and licensing department.
The idea candidate will have a passion for history, boundless curiosity, a strong work ethic, a collegial manner and a drive to help us organize, catalogue and market one of the country’s premiere archives of local television news. A willingness to get dirty (literally) digging through boxes full of New York’s television history is a plus!
WPIX was founded in 1948, 70 years ago, and has an extensive library of news and other programs in a variety of formats, including 16 millimeter film, U-Matic ¾ inch and Betacam SD.Responsibilities
The intern will play a key role in helping us catalogue these materials in an effort to build a searchable database to assist in licensing as well as news-gathering and social-media efforts. The intern will also assist in the digital ingestion and virtual organization of archival material.
The intern will periodically work at an off-site storage facility in New Jersey, organizing, cataloguing and identifying immediate licensing opportunities in this valuable portion of our collection, consisting of news programs from 1981 to 1989.
The ultimate goal is to develop your skills as an archivist/historian while helping us tap the potential of our extensive holdings. This is a rare opportunity to work with a premier film and tape collection that is also largely unexplored. It could be a dream role for the right person.
The internship is paid, and school credit is also available.Qualifications
- Actively enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- 3.0 or higher GPA
- Entering your junior, or senior year in the fall of 2018
- Knowledge of Final Cut X a plus
- Must have a demonstrated track record of study in areas including but not limited to film, television, history, archival management and curatorial museum work.
- Must be available to work Monday through Friday, eight hours a day. Start and end times are flexible.
- Access to own transportation (for trips to New Jersey storage facility) is preferable, but not mandatory.
