The New York City Charter School Center (Charter Center) is seeking to hire a marketing and communications expert to serve as Manager of Marketing and Communications. The Manager will promote the Charter Center’s brand and programs to internal and external stakeholders, including media, schools, board members, funders, community groups and charter parents. The Manager will also work closely with the Charter Center’s external public relations consultant to support the organization’s legislative and policy goals and promote the charter sector as a whole. The position oversees a web specialist and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
The Manager of Marketing and Communications will direct internal and external communications, particularly as they relate to the organization’s programs and the promotion of the charter school sector.
Effectively market the Charter Center’s brand, services and programs to the charter community and general public
Working in partnership with the Charter Center’s numerous departments, you’ll:
- Maintain, update and effectively leverage the Charter Center’s brand and key messages to strengthen the organization’s reputation and services.
- Generate and write a variety of the organization’s electronic and printed content and communications including, weekly e-Action Alerts, newsletters, promotional/marketing materials, etc.
- Ensure consistency in all external communications by proof reading/editing/approving all print and online communications generated by Charter Center staff and leadership, including op-eds, CEO messages, blog posts, etc.
- Assist with marketing of the Charter Center’s programs through online and print advertising, earned media, direct mail, community outreach and various strategic partners. Assist in ad creation and video/commercial productions, as needed.
- Push out daily social media content.
- Generate and/or support events to promote the successes and key milestones of the Charter Center and the NYC charter movement.
Support the Charter Center’s advocacy and public messaging campaigns
As a thought partner to the Policy & Advocacy team and our public relations firm, you’ll:
- Proactively seek out media and web stories to promote the charter movement.
- Organize weekly meetings and circulate ideas/pitches to PR consultants.
- Work with the Policy and Advocacy department to develop detailed communications plans to support the Charter Center’s ambitious policy and advocacy goals.
- Coordinate, as appropriate, with partner organizations (political offices, CMOs, charter schools, state and local education departments, state, regional and national charter associations, etc.) on press activity.
- Provide support for public events in collaboration with the Charter Center’s various departments, external strategic partners, schools and media.
Oversee the Charter Center’s multiple websites
With support from a Web/IT consultant, you’ll:
- Be responsible for four websites under the Charter Center umbrella (www.nyccharterschools.org; www.charterNYC.org; www.nycSPED.org; www.nyccollaborates.org).
- Manage daily web content changes and additions.
- Coordinate with various internal departments to keep program, event and resource pages up-to-date; find news and fresh content or imagery; and, write/edit webpage content.
- Direct long-term website projects including redesigns and overhauls to various elements of the site (Vendor List, Resource Library, etc.).
Serve as primary liaison for all Charter Center communications
The administrative component of the work requires you to:
- Maintain Charter Center’s media database and press archives: assist in the day-to-day management of the Charter Center’s media hits, blog entries and statements from the CEO; prepare media packets for press, Board, etc.
- Supervise and manage external consultant teams (designers, IT).
- Function as the primary contact with vendors (translators, photographers, etc.) and printers.
- Conduct all media buying and maintain relationships with both sales and editorial teams at a multitude of city and statewide outlets.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects under tight deadlines. A successful candidate is one who is self-motivated, reliable, responsible and analytical. Among your accountabilities, excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to conveying ideas clearly and interacting effectively with all levels and functions of the organization. Candidate must have the ability to be direct, yet diplomatic and professional, when addressing issues or deficiencies.
Candidates must have:
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in communications and/or media relations in a nonprofit or government agency.
- Working knowledge of charter schools and K-12 education issues is preferred.
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Experience crafting stories to pitch to media or for web.
- Event management experience and strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrated record of successful project management and ability to initiate contacts with the press.
- Familiarity in writing for and using best practices in electronic communications and social media.
- Ability to manage and promote a non-profit brand with a limited budget.
- Ease at managing competing demands and quickly determining the top priorities.
- Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Hands-on multi-tasker who works well under pressure.
- Understands the necessity and benefits of team work and collaboration.
- Desire to hold oneself accountable for results and be transparent about success and short comings.
- Commitment to service of NYC charter schools and a drive to problem solve at all levels of work.
- Humility and respect for the hard work of school professionals and school parents.
- Sense of responsibility and stewardship for the philanthropic funds given to the Charter Center.
