Position: Reporter/Researcher in The Washington DC Bureau of The Yomiuri Shimbun
The Yomiuri Shimbun is Japan’s largest daily newspaper. We are headquartered in Tokyo and have over twenty international bureaus, three of which are in the United States: New York, Washington, and Los Angeles.
Qualifications: Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree. Background in international relations, foreign policy, economics or journalism is preferred. Attention to accuracy and the faculty to multitask effectively under deadline is required. A strong work ethic paired with the facility to develop and maintain good sources and ability to take direction well and work collaboratively with others is essential. Japanese language skills are preferred but not necessary. Applicants should already be based in the greater Washington, DC area.
Description: Main duties involve assisting our Washington-based correspondent by attending daily briefings and press conferences, tracking relevant stories, arranging and conducting interviews, composing clear and conside memos and covering various events, including those held by area think tanks and Congress. Rapid and precise transcription is also required.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to coverage of the White House, State Department, Department of Defense, Department of Treasury and FRB. Additionally, the selected applicant may also be required to work other news areas as situation warrants. This position has no byline or article-writing opportunities.
Applicants must be prepared to work occasional weekends and overtime once or twice during the week. This is a full-time position. Compensation includes medical/dental benefits, and 401(k).
