Job Summary    
The Sr. Manager of PR and Social Media will be responsible for leading a newly integrated function that drives brand awareness for Staples while supporting the company’s B2B sales efforts and seasonal initiatives for its Retail business and protecting the organization’s image through reputation management. They must possess deep knowledge of key audiences and issues in order to guide influencer prioritization and engagement. They will ensure that the company’s vision is articulated on all external facing media channels, both traditional and non-traditional, and bring innovative ideas and fresh perspective to campaign planning. They will lead and develop a team of communications professionals.

Key Job Responsibilities

Impact on Business

  • Manage day-to-day management of an organization’s PR and Social functions
  • Help to create one voice for all social and PR content for Staples- help to unify voice of organization through development of relevant media campaigns that will assist in lead generation for Staples Business Advantage, and Staples’ stores
  • Manage the selection and implementation of specific social media technologies
  • Oversee the selection of social media and PR agencies, and manage these critical relationships at a leadership level 
  • Participate in development of crisis response plan and manage media during crisis
  • Develop a communications strategy detailing key messages to use with external audiences

Innovation and Change

  • Review existing social media and PR functions, add suggest/implement new capabilities to elevate program
  • Consult with outside agencies and resources to keep program on cutting edge
  • Constantly educate yourself on latest changes to media landscape and resulting implications on the Staples PR-Social program


  • Partnership with senior leadership/all functions and BUs to ensure clear messaging
  • Consult with SMEs across business to ensure external facing content is developed accurately and appropriately, well-representing the Staples brand
  • External partnership with vendors
  • Variety of social media outlets to maintain/monitor content, etc.
  • Coordinate with PR and social agencies
  • Work closely with internal communications team to ensure consistent messaging both internally and externally

People Leadership

  • 5 Direct Reports
  • Train and develop junior members of team
  • Conduct performance reviews/coaching, etc

KPIs– Key Performance Indicators (i.e. how is success defined in this role?)

  • Year-over-year media impressions for seasonal PR campaigns
  • Positive sentiment media coverage
  • Sales of related business units
  • Set realistic parameters to measure engagement with social media channels
  • Partner with business units to develop additional, non-traditional KPI’s, like leads generated, views of content driven etc.


Education/Experience Equivalent (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelors in English, Communications or Journalism or other related field

Professional Knowledge/Experience

  • 8-10+ Years of experience in Social, PR or Marketing related leadership roles, preferably in-house
  • Strategic and creative thinking
  • Experience creating and managing integrated campaigns including PR, social media and content
  • Experience implementing social media and PR campaigns in support of product launches, seasonal messages, and driving brand transformation
  • Crisis communications (both social and traditional) experience
  • Background in B2B PR, including working with a field sales force, enabling them for success
  • Ability to design and continuously evolve a social media and PR strategy that grows Staples brand reputation, engagement, reach, audience and, as a result, conversion.
  • Proven track record of educating and influencing business leaders on PR/social media value, strategy and programs
  • Ability to conceptualize social media and content that delivers B2B focused high-performing programs to drive business objectives
  • Experience planning, implementing and analyzing paid social media activities
  • Experience with community building and engagement, social customer care
  • Experience with Social listening strategies and tools
  • Proven track record working with influencers
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate vertically and horizontally throughout the organization
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects/tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience leading and developing a team of communication professionals
  • Event orchestration and management
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
