Newsday, an award-winning news organization serving Long Island through its portfolio of print and digital products, has an opening for a Deputy Photo Editor who will work closely across all departments in the newsroom to produce visual content for all sections and all platforms. This person will assign, select and edit video and still photography.  A background in feature photo editing, including food and lifestyle, is preferred. Responsibilities include setting up assignments, keeping track of daily developments and responding to situations. These jobs require organized, self-starters who can assign and supervise visual journalists. Flexibility, creativity and the ability to work under tight deadlines as part of a team are musts for this job. Flexibility in scheduling is required. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with editors, reporters, photographers, developers and designers to come up with ideas for visual content
  • Playing a key role in visuals as compelling as possible for our audience
  • Ensuring our visual content meets Newsday standards
  • Understanding and adhering to copyright guidelines
  • Managing to the department budget
  • Staying plugged into visual innovations
  • Using metrics to help improve our reach to our audience
  • Assigning and overseeing the work of photo researchers

Experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and three to five years of supervisory experience in a newsroom
  • Have a portfolio of innovative and impactful visual projects you’ve worked on
  • Proficiency in Adobe Premiere, Photo Shop and image management systems are required Committed to a high standard of journalism with a keen attention to detail
  • Creative, fast, accurate and flexible
  • Adept at juggling tasks and calm under pressure in deadline situations
  • Familiar with best practices in the industry and naturally curious about how other newsrooms are using digital tools to better tell stories
  • Reliable transportation to and from Newsday’s suburban Melville office
