Director, Product Management


DEPARTMENT:  PBS Digital

STATUS:  Full-time/Regular/Exempt


The incumbent will lead product management, development and the ongoing maintenance of PBS KIDS and PBS Parents web products.

 

Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage product lifecycle for central pbskids.org navigation pages and services and the upcoming PBS KIDS for Parents website;
  • Work with the Analytics, Content, Products and Tech teams to build and implement game, site and app analytics tools;
  • Work with PBS KIDS for Parents stakeholders and vendors to implement site wide updates and changes;
  • Manage producer-facing interface, aggregating all producer tools and documentation for all producer-facing products;
  • Coordinate with PBS staff, PBS member stations, and others to develop tools for local station communities;
  • Ensure projects undergo a rigorous quality assurance process;
  • Represent PBS KIDS Digital team to internal and external audiences at meetings, with corporate partners, and other constituencies within the PBS system;
  • Plan and manage usability testing of audience-facing products;
  • Serve as integral member of PBS KIDS team, participating in group projects and discussions, staying up-to-date on research and related trends, and contributing to overall vision and strategy;
  • Work with external vendors to assess partnerships when appropriate;
  • Be an expert with respect to the competition;
  • Manage production associates as needed;
  • Manage budgets and outside contractors as needed

Requirements for success:

  • Four or more years’ experience in digital product management, online publishing, software development or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Educational Technology, Interaction Design or related field, or equivalent work experience.  Master’s degree a plus;
  • Must have experience developing digital products which are used by other products such as APIs, databases and publishing tools;
  • Must have experience building scalable online systems for large audiences;
  • Must have general knowledge of and strong interest in young children and/or early childhood education; experience with early elementary education a plus;
  • Must be resourceful, self-directed, and a creative problem-solver who can meet aggressive deadlines;
  • Should have experience supervising teams, tactfully critiquing digital productions, managing budgets, and leading educational initiatives;
  • Solid understanding of HTML5, databases, mobile and web game technologies, iOS, Android, online video, blogging platforms, content management systems and community management and web analytics tools;
  • Knowledge of product management methodologies such as Agile and LEAN;
  • Knowledge of API design;
  • Strong management skills; ability to work with content managers, technologists and designers both inside and outside of the company;
  • Must be a strategic thinker who can meet aggressive deadlines and prioritize several assignments at the same time;
  • High degree of initiative and ability to take charge and lead without day-to-day supervision;
  • Previous experience developing educational online resources for children ages 3-12 preferred;
  • Experience producing tools for game development is a plus
