The Chronicle of Philanthropy seeks an online news journalist with the ability to report and write quickly to cover breaking news and keep our website stocked every day with important news about the $1.1-trillion nonprofit sector. The online news reporter will cover nonprofit fundraising, research and studies about the nonprofit world, news about government actions that affect nonprofits and other topics. The reporter will monitor news about nonprofits appearing in other publications and consult with nonprofit experts as sources for “how-to” articles that help nonprofits do their jobs. This role reports to the Managing Editor.

Responsibilities:

  • Report and write multi-sourced, authoritative stories of varying length about the nonprofit world
  • Develop and pitch ideas for stories
  • Contribute short updates online as news breaks
  • Write “how to” articles that help nonprofit workers do their jobs more efficiently and effectively
  • Aggregate important news about nonprofits from other sources
  • Effectively promote your work and the work of your colleagues on social media

Qualifications:

  • College degree and 2+ years’ experience in reporting role
  • Strong reporting and writing skills
  • Ability to cultivate sources who can offer perspective and tips on topics of national significance
  • A strong record of accuracy
  • Understanding of and adherence to journalistic ethics
  • Ability to juggle multiple stories and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong social media skills
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit world is preferred
