The Chief Communications and Development Officer is responsible for cultivating, developing and managing audience engagement to advance the missions of USADA and TrueSport in order to grow the culture of Clean Sport through character, sportsmanship and healthy competition. As the organizational leader in communications, public relations, media relations, athlete education and the TrueSport program, this role is responsible for the management of all communication strategies, outreach programs and educational efforts to reach a wide array of audiences. The Chief Communications and Development Officer provides exceptional organizational leadership, through strategic vision, fundraising initiatives and relationship management plans designed to influence specific groups, including athletes, coaches, parents, support personnel, sport leaders and media influencers.   

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Oversee and lead all aspects of USADA’s communications, development and outreach efforts, including public relations, athlete education, fundraising and youth sports program development. Serves as the executive leader for TrueSport and Athlete Education, responsible for providing leadership, fiduciary management, long-term strategy and relationship support to growing and developing the athlete education process through the concepts of sportsmanship, character building and clean and healthy competition, from youth to elite-level athletes. Sets media relations and public perception strategies, serving as the organization’s primary media relations contact. Leads issues management and crisis communications response, in conjunction with CEO, to ensure organization’s messages are clearly articulated and activated. Oversees organizational strategies focused on content creation and storytelling to create public interest in effects of clean sport. Leads all marketing, branding and advertising efforts. Serves as the lead partnership contact for education programs and presence, driving all outreach to protect the rights of clean athletes. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications

  • Oversee and execute long-term strategic planning for communications and media initiatives, as well as annual tactical planning
  • Cultivate and manage positive and beneficial relationships with members of the media and coordinate other USADA staff’s interaction with media members, working with national and international media outlets
  • Serve as USADA’s primary public relations contact, working diligently to advance the organization’s voice and position through social media, athlete engagement, media relations and general public inquiries
  • Implements existing marketing, public relations, and media strategy plans and programs and oversees the planning and reviewing of communications initiatives generated by Communications department, as well as by other departments to ensure consistency, brand messaging accuracy, and effectiveness
  • Oversees storytelling strategies and encourages cross-department collaboration to promote initiatives within and across the organization, including TrueSport, Olympic Education, Science, Operations and Premier Sports Divisions
  • Develops and devises metrics to measure effectiveness of organizational communications efforts
  • Supervise and assist in developing comprehensive press communications plans/policies and crisis communications planning; social media policies; press releases; developing and managing story lines with journalists and media
  • Direct and conduct press conferences/teleconferences as needed
  • Manage and coordinate major media projects with networks, with past projects including: HBO Real Sports, HBO 24/7, 60 Minutes, Outside the Lines, ABC Evening News, and the CBS Early Show
  • Initiate and grow international media engagement, working with other Anti-Doping Organizations and initiatives in Sport Integrity to advance USADA’s mission and presence

Brand Development and Fundraising

  • Coordinate the development and documentation of USADA and TrueSport brand assets, as well as dissemination and communication of brand to internal staff and closely related stakeholders
  • Generate fundraising and funding opportunities for TrueSport programs through donor cultivation and strategic marketing partnerships
  • Oversees the marketing and promotion activities, including development and execution of clean sport public service advertising campaigns
  • Oversees and/or supports distribution of published information to all external parties, including USADA publications and website content, video and graphic materials
  • Promote TrueSport efforts through strategic communications, public relations, marketing and sales programs to drive revenue, partnerships and exposure

TrueSport and Athlete Education

  • Lead and manage TrueSport and Olympic Education teams to best-in-class educational experiences and opportunities
  • Grow audiences within the TrueSport program through innovative, efficient and targeted programs
  • Work with TrueSport and Athlete Education team members to identify new opportunities and create new programs, engagement initiatives and to serve new audiences
  • Work with Director of TrueSport and Education to develop age-appropriate content to reach audiences with action, in connecting positive messages in youth sports to required and inspired messages of Clean Sport for Olympic athletes
  • Connect all touchpoints of athlete education for the organization, ensuring athletes are motivated by Clean Sport and have opportunities to participate in growing clean sport community.
  • Oversees all organizational athlete engagement and athlete ambassador programs to ensure athlete participation in the youth and elite-level athlete programs and in organizational storytelling strategies

GENERAL:

  • Develop and leverage relationships with related external parties, including but not limited to – USOC, National Governing Bodies, International Federations, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and other key stakeholders
  • Facilitate preparations related to executive leadership and Board of Director presentations and events
  • Travel as necessary to media events with CEO, conferences, trade shows, or special events to deliver presentations, or to support/promote USADA programs and resources to cultivate relationships in anti-doping community, youth sports education and with key stakeholders to develop partnerships and exposure opportunities
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS / BA degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field required. Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years related work experience in Senior leadership roles within publications/communications, marketing, advertising, and/or public relations areas
  • Minimum ten (10) years successful work experience with staff management, supervision, and process creation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships with media
  • Ability to remain calm and perform accurately under pressure
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work with various levels of management
