Position Summary

Coordinates both traditional and social media activities on behalf of Weill Cornell Medicine.

Job Responsibilities

  • Creates strategic media plans that support institutional & cancer leadership priorities. Pitches story ideas to local, national & international media. Writes media pitches, expert alerts & other materials aimed at promoting WCM in the field of oncology.
  • Works closely and collaborates with various centers/departments related to oncology, as well as administration, staff and departmental communication or marketing specialists to publicize research, treatment advances and patient stories about oncology.
  • Responds to media inquiries and coordinates with newspaper and television reporters, film crews, journalists, photographers, producers, and media in general to organize interviews and media projects. Supports other team members’ service lines as needed.
  • Accompanies TV film crews, photographers, and other media to and from interviews and photo sessions to help ensure that policies and procedures are maintained and that the institution's interests are represented.
  • Develops creative content and coordinates posting on WCM’s social media platforms. Monitors social media trends and topics and identifies ways for the institution to connect its news and content specific to oncology.
  • Conducts social media monitoring to identify ways to engage and amplify, as well as provide oversight, of departmental social media platforms.
  • Meets and maintains contact with WCM faculty, physicians, administration and staff to provide guidance, generate stories and coordinate media relations projects that will promote the institution's reputation and mission, locally/nationally/regionally.
  • Attends, supports and promotes WCM at oncology medical conferences, required to attend three of the priority oncology conferences each year. Develops traditional and social media plans in advance of meetings.
  • Assists with annual reporting on traditional media and social media, as well as oncology-specific reports to centers and departments as needed.
  • Coordinates press briefings, special projects and events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • College degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years related experience in a PR agency, academic or healthcare setting. Journalism background is beneficial, but not required.
  • Experience in the field of oncology media relations required. Experience with public relations, media relations or social media supporting with NCI-designated cancer centers is beneficial, but not required.
  • Experience on social media platforms, including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Experience with software monitoring databases for traditional and social media.
