Director of Publications

Dia Art Foundation has an immediate opening for an experienced Director of Publications. This is a full-time position based at Dia’s office in New York City.

Under the direction of Dia’s Deputy Director and Chief Curator, the Director of Publications will develop, lead, and implement the production of academic books, institutional publications, and a variety of promotional materials; participate in the development of new titles and publishing initiatives; act as the primary liaison between contractors, co-publishers, and publishing vendors; and perform other duties relating to Dia’s publishing program.

Dia’s philosophy is centered on artists and the execution of their visions through a support structure that provides excellence, scholarship, and creative freedom. In keeping with Dia’s history, exhibitions and public programs are conceived in direct exchange and collaboration with artists. The Publications Department conceives and produces scholarly publications for exhibitions, Dia’s collection, and additional material (printed, online, and multimedia) that support the institution’s mission. Publications at Dia are conceived and produced at the highest level, with a proud tradition of excellence and innovation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the development and production of all printed and digital materials, including brochures, didactic materials, exhibition catalogues, monographic publications, and other books and projects
  • Ensure consistency across all areas of editorial production
  • Effect and maintain the highest level of editorial work for Dia’s publications and related materials 
  • Pay close attention to the maintenance of Dia’s preferred style internally and externally
  • Work closely with the Deputy Director and Chief Curator as well as the Curatorial team to conceive and produce new Dia publications or series
  • Identify, hire, and supervise the work of publishing contractors and vendors, including editors, distributors, graphic designers, indexers, peer reviewers, printers, proofreaders, transcribers, translators, and writers
  • Undertake and/or oversee administrative tasks associated with book production, such as executing contracts, processing invoices and expense reports, maintaining publication budgets, creating and overseeing production schedules, compiling research material, content editing, and maintaining Dia’s publications archive and photo library
  • Initiate and manage Dia’s co-publication and distribution agreements and represent Dia’s interests in all contracts with touring venues and partners
  • Responsible for creating strategies for national and international book distribution and promotion
  • Manage two full-time staff members, the Publications Associate and the Rights and Reproductions Associate, to accomplish departmental goals and priorities; manage staff growth and development
  • Work closely with Dia’s Senior Graphic Designer to coordinate the design and production of Dia publications
  • Actively promote Dia’s publications within a public context, such as book fairs, book launches, conferences, exhibitions, and so forth; maintain an active presence in the field of publications with colleagues and peers in order to advance Dia’s standing and reception
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of Dia’s collection, its history of exhibitions and publications, and its archive; familiarity with Dia’s sites
  • Work collaboratively across Dia’s departments (particularly Communications and Development) to achieve a consistent style for all print and digital materials
  • Promote a productive and congenial team environment driven by collaboration, open communication, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with Dia:Beacon’s Bookshop (and the forthcoming Dia:Chelsea Bookshop Manager) on retail strategy for Dia publications and inventory management
  • Represent Dia as necessary in external meetings and functions; this position represents Dia to the outside community, particularly with regards to artists, scholars, and other individuals involved in Dia’s publications
  • Establish and manage publication meetings with internal and external parties, developing agendas and follow up
  • Maintain an active interest in relevant contemporary writing, design, and publications in order to actively contribute to all Dia publication discussions
  • Work with Deputy Director and Chief Curator and Dia’s curators and archivists to discuss publication and dissemination of Dia’s archival materials and the ongoing process of oral histories

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, MA preferred, with a strong background in writing and editing
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of publication experience, preferably within an arts institution
  • Proficiency in French, German, Italian, or Spanish desired
  • Must have proven direct experience in book production and strong project management skills
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, highly effective communication and collaboration skills, and experience in the scholarly editorial process
  • Ability to manage but also work collaboratively with artists, authors, designers, editors, and publishers
  • Ability to travel between Dia:Chelsea in New York City and Dia:Beacon in Beacon, New York, for monthly meetings
  • Knowledge of postwar and contemporary art, art history, and architecture, with particular emphasis on artists in Dia’s collection and exhibition history
