The Communications Manager is the senior manager of Sabin’s Communications Team and is responsible for budgets, staff/resource allocations and adherence to timelines.  The Manager is responsible for regular promotion of Sabin, its partners and programs.  The Manager reports to the Vice President of Communications.


Management and Timelines

  • Supervise and mentor the Communications Team, supporting skills and professional development
  • Regularly assess workloads across the Communications Team, adjusting resources and source vendors/freelances when needed
  • Develop and maintain a contact database of vendors/freelancers, indicating services provided and rating based on our experience or feedback from referrals
  • Develop and manage calendar of communications-related activities across Sabin, tracking out a year ahead for major events and milestones, including publications and events
  • Ensure communications projects are delivered on time in accordance with timelines
  • Monitor spending against the communications budget and review monthly with Vice President of Communications

Resource Development

  • Support Sabin’s Resource Development Team with the creation of materials and messaging
  • Support grant proposals with strategic review, writing and editing services
  • Ensure all new programs include adequate staff resources and budget for communications activities


  • Manage Sabin’s websites, including implementing all back-end updates and administrative functions of web and social platforms, databases and all other supportive technologies 
  • Oversee metrics and analysis of social campaigns and websites; regularly provide recommended adjustments based on analytics 
  • Keep sites refreshed with regular content postings and new blog posts addressing the full range of Sabin’s topic areas

Programs and Events/Conferences

  • Regularly meet with program teams to flag upcoming events, projects and publications to identify opportunities and develop a communications strategy for each
  • Generate coverage for targeted programs via op-eds, through earned media and on social media
  • Manage and implement programs or projects with a communications focus, such as journalism training
  • Develop and update key messaging for Sabin programs in collaboration with project teams
  • In coordination with Manager of Meetings and Events, determine communications needs and manage production for events, including:
    • Sabin-hosted events, including the Gold Medal event
    • Outside events where Sabin staff play a substantial role, such as speaking or moderating
    • Outside events where Sabin staff are only participants, but the value of the event warrants some level of communications 
    • Speaker support: Proactively assess Sabin speaker needs and assign resources well in advance to create slides/materials and to articulate objectives, audience, messages, etc.
    • Develop and deploy event follow-up communications to amplify and showcase Sabin staff, projects and our partners

Executive and Sabin Promotion

  • Work with Sabin teams to write and deliver annual report and board updates
  • Identify opportunities to promote Sabin leadership and secure relevant speaking, social media, networking or writing opportunities; provide all supportive communications
  • Provide final edit and review of all external promotional materials
  • Other related duties, as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as public health, journalism, English, communications, public relations; Master’s degree in a related field preferred 
  • 7+ years relevant experience 
  • Proven ability to manage people
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective communications strategies
  • Experience running integrated online campaigns, including email, website, blogs and social media
  • Demonstrated project management and timeline skills working with diverse internal teams and external teams, including vendors
  • Expert understanding of internet technology
  • Excellence in CRM implementation and strategy; experience with Engaging Networks or similar platform
  • Experience in web and social media communications, as well as grassroots campaigns
  • Experience marketing or promoting products or services
  • Familiarity with HTML, digital asset creation and archiving
  • Exceptional writing skills with an ability to distill complex issues into compelling messaging targeting a variety of audiences
  • Ability to produce compelling pieces under deadline without sacrificing accuracy or attention to detail
  • Ability to operate with purpose, urgency and accuracy in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial and deadline-driven environment; superior service orientation
  • Effectively manage projects so problems are anticipated and solutions identified quickly
  • Strong strategic/critical thinking and goal orientation with the ability to execute flawlessly
  • Thrive in entrepreneurial, team-oriented work environments; experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to be flexible, creative, enthusiastic and optimistic
  • Must be able to travel, as needed, and work effectively with people of diverse background and cultures
