Instructional Designer, Early Childhood Professional Learning

PBS is looking for an Instructional Designer to join the PBS Education team in support of advancing its mission to provide high-quality professional learning experiences for teachers and childcare providers through its online professional development platform, PBS TeacherLine. PBS TeacherLine provides high-quality professional development for educators through more than 50 graduate-level, facilitated, online courses and self-paced courses for preK-12 educators.


The Instructional Designer, Early Childhood Professional Learning will provide strategic guidance on best practices in professional learning for early childhood educators (preK-3rd grade) and will lead the development of research-based, next-generation online professional learning experiences for early childhood educators.


Essential duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Work with the Director of Educator Program Strategy, expert consultants, and outside content producers to design, review, and test new course delivery formats, and develop specifications for online content for producers/content developers
  • Research and apply current technologies and instructional design pedagogies in the development of online courses and the course environment
  • Lead the development of new course content including project schedules and deliverables that meet PBS standards for high-quality professional development and communicate progress with key stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle
  • Oversee the reversioning of existing TeacherLine courses to fit new models of online content delivery.
  • Serve as principal internal reviewer of new and reversioned TeacherLine online content to ensure its instructional appropriateness;
  • Manage instructional designers, writers, and proofreaders for courses and coordinate outside reviewers as needed and in accordance with established timelines
  • Negotiate and manage the acquisition of content licenses and other assets for courses
  • Effectively manage the implementation of course content into the PBS TeacherLine platform
  • Participate in the evaluation of new course content

Requirements for success include:

  • Masters degree in education, instructional design, curriculum design, or other relevant field preferred; Bachelor’s degree in such fields required
  • Experience in instructional design and web design
  • Experience with online education and virtual learning environments for early childhood educators
  • Seven or more years of professional experience including classroom teaching, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five or more years of professional experience and knowledge of advanced instructional design techniques, adult learning, and virtual learning environments
  • Must have strong knowledge and interest in early childhood educator professional development policies and best practices
  • Must have produced or have worked with producers of online learning courses that includes the use of multimedia
  • Experience managing online content development and maintenance process
  • Experience in project management including managing timelines and budgets with external vendors and consultants
  • Experience managing projects developed by external vendors, consultants and clients.
  • Experience building collaborative relationships with educational organizations and institutions
  • Experience with non-profit and grant-funded projects is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with the use of media and instructional technologies in early childhood education contexts
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with online learning environments and virtual instruction for early childhood educators
  • Knowledge of HTML and other web related applications as they relate to the production of innovative online courses
  • Understanding of portals, content management systems, e-learning platforms, and knowledge management
  • Strong knowledge of relevant national standards from NAEYC, ISTE and other institutions, as well as state requirements for early childhood educator recertification
  • The ability to research current learning pedagogies and technologies and apply their usefulness in the development of online courses and online professional development resources
  • Knowledgeable about educational needs of early childhood educators and the ability to develop online content based on these and projected needs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly skilled in delivering constructive, clear, and diplomatic feedback to external vendors, consultants and clients
  • Excellent public speaking skills and the ability to articulate the effectiveness of online professional development programs
  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively manage projects and budgets, and to set and accomplish goals and priorities efficiently
  • High degree of initiative, creativity, and have the ability to work independently and within teams
