Assistant Director of Editorial Services

Responsible for the day-to-day editorial and strategic direction of the publications division, with an emphasis on copy-editing for print publications and digital pieces, as well as coordination and project management of select initiatives. This person is a major contributor to the alumni magazine (and other principal publications), and will assist in the creation of a digital version of the magazine. This position requires strong writing and editing skills, as well as someone who is deadline-driven and detail-oriented. The assistant director of editorial services is part of the Marketing and Communications office, and under the direction of the director of publications and editorial services.

Responsibilities:

Copy-write, edit and proofread print pieces, including brochures, invitations and other collateral; as well as some electronic communications, including emails.
Write alumni profiles, on-campus news articles, and feature stories, which include interviewing various sources and event coverage (some local travel may be involved to interview subjects of profiles and content for feature stories).
Assist with the creation of a digital magazine that will complement the printed version. Contribute multimedia content, and help to manage and update the site.
Help with hiring photographers for the magazine and assisting at photo shoots.
General publications assistance, which includes contributing to the writing, editing, and photo-sourcing processes for other major publications.
Conduct interviews, gather information and background research as needed to carry out writing and project tasks.
Contribute as an active and engaged member of a highly collaborative marketing and communications team.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years of experience in editing, writing and project management. A combination of experience and education, including internships and freelance work may be considered. Experience writing for higher education or a nonprofit is preferred.
Excellent editing skills, including for grammar and style.
Knowledge of AP style required.
Digital media experience, and knowledge of HTML and CMS, as well as analytics.
Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop, and Microsoft Word.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Good organizational skills, including the ability to simultaneously manage a large variety of tasks, set priorities and manage the involvement of other staff.
Able to deal with the pressure of multiple deadlines, and to collaborate across a broad institutional framework, ranging from senior leadership to service providers.
Ability to function and contribute in a team environment but also able to work under limited supervision and direction.
