Role overview
We are seeking an excellent food editor, writer, curator and manager—a food journalist and restaurant critic who has strong experience in both a print and digital media environment. We are seeking a leader in the vertical who is bursting with ideas on audience development and who has a strong list of contacts in the eating and drinking sectors.


The focus of the job will be primarily on what’s exciting and new in the New York food and drink scene, as well as producing service-focused digital listicles and larger food-related cover packages, and several larger print features. The Food & Drink Editor serves as the publication’s chief restaurant and bar critic, who will guide New Yorkers on where (or where not) to eat, drink and have an amazing night out in NYC. The Food & Drink Editor will also serve as the editorial liaison to the Time Out Market New York opening early 2019 in Dumbo.


Key responsibilities


  • Plan, write, commission, edit and proof all food-and-drink content (reviews, features, listings, interviews, etc.) across digital and print platforms.


    Oversee the layout and production of print pages alongside the Art Director, ensuring daily and weekly deadlines are met.


    Have your finger ever on the pulse of New York’s robust food and drink scene; use your professional contacts and social media networks to be the first to identify the next big thing.


    Manage the Assistant Food & Drink Editor, as well as a reliable stable of talented freelancers who can contribute food and drink content for Time Out.


    Conceptualize annual food-cover franchises, including but not limited to 100 Best Dishes, Eat List, Drink List, Battle of the Burger and Bar Awards.


    Work with video team to create successful food-and-drink video content.


    Contribute food-and-drink content to Time Out USA’s national coverage


    Collaborate with events team on items including Battle of the Burger, Bar Awards, etc.


    Represent the brand at industry events and in media appearances


    Oversee expenses, freelancer contracts, and invoices for food section


    Manage food and drink inclusion across social media


    Help curate and provide editorial for our Market initiative in New York


Personal attributes and essential skills


  • A passion for and excellent knowledge of the food-and-drink industry, in New York proper and beyond.


    Minimum five years professional consumer content experience in the food and/or lifestyle sector, with a strong reporting and packaging background.


    Excellent grasp and understanding of SEO best practices.


    Highest standard of accuracy and attention to detail.


    Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize accordingly.


    The ability to write copy in line with highest editorial standards.


    The ability to work quickly to meet tight deadlines under pressure.


    A strong industry reputation.


    Flexibility and a professional approach at all times.


    The ability to self-supervise in order to meet deadlines.


    Ability to work in and contribute to a fun and dynamic team-based environment.


    Must be educated to degree level or equivalent industry qualification.
