Social Media Editor

The New Republic is looking for a clever, industrious, and experienced digital journalist to join our team as our social media editor.
The social media editor’s primary goal will be to increase TNR’s traffic from social media and other top referrers. This will be accomplished by boosting the engagement per post; drawing more traffic from sites like Reddit, Pocket, Digg, and RealClearPolitics; and increasing our Twitter and Facebook followings.
The social media editor runs all of TNR’s social media accounts. The editor is responsible for writing and scheduling posts, working with other editors on article and social media headlines, managing one intern, working with the art department on illustrations and photos for posts, developing relationships with other media companies, and interpreting traffic analytics and other data to expand TNR’s reach on social media and elsewhere online. Photoshop skills are not required, but preferred. Applicants should have at least two years of relevant experience.
To qualify for this job, you should have a genuine interest in the news and follow it closely, and be a disciplined writer who understands the hazards in distributing bite-sized news at a high velocity. You have shown mastery of the leading social media platforms, specifically how to build and maintain communities of highly intelligent readers who closely follow politics and culture. And you are a positive, self-motivated, and mature presence in the workplace.
This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C., a small, tight-knit office where the majority of the company’s web team works. The social media editor reports to the executive editor of the website, but the position is among the most collaborative in the company. The social media editor will also work closely with the deputy editor of the website, the audience engagement editor, the features editor of the website, the staff writers, the art department, and the publishing team. Some of those people are based out of the New York office. Thus, this person must be comfortable working with remote colleagues over the phone, Slack, email, and teleconference.
