Specialty: Creative, Video
Level: Experienced (Non-Manager)
Duration: Full Time
Salary Description: competitive

The Dodo is the leading digital media brand for animal people. We’re committed to creating fun, entertaining, emotional animal-related content — everything from cute viral videos to heartwarming rescue stories and meaningful advocacy pieces. Our audience is everyone who loves animals, from people who are obsessed with their pets all the way to people dedicating their lives to making the world a better place for animals. We are looking for passionate, proactive, flexible people who are interested in helping build a brand that not only entertains but makes people around the world feel connected to animals.

The Dodo is seeking an experienced and creative storyteller to help launch our new brand, Dodo Kids, as a Kids Story Editor. Reporting to the Editorial Director, you’ll be a key contributor as we develop the department and help hone editorial and growth strategy. You’re a skilled writer with a deep appreciation for brand continuity who will excel at adapting our existing voice and content in a dynamic, engaging way for a new generation of Dodo fans.

As the Story Editor for the Dodo Kids team, you’ll be responsible for reimagining and rewriting our existing videos to develop new scripts that appeal to kids in a super fun, engaging, emotionally compelling way — while preserving our existing brand identity. On a day-to-day basis, you’ll work with voiceover talent to ensure the right tone, and manage the Kids Motion Graphics Editor as they rework each video’s visual content to match your scripts and make them maximally engaging and entertaining based on the way kids think. On a big picture level, you’ll use your experience in children’s media to help shape our strategy around distribution and brand development, and will channel your familiarity with the market to proactively structure Dodo Kids’ development in a way that lends itself to advertising and other potential business and revenue opportunities.

As our ideal candidate, you’ll have at least 5 years of experience writing and scripting for a children’s media brand with an emphasis on video, and a deep professional familiarity with the children’s media industry and market. You have a dynamic, creative mind, but you understand how creative and business rely on each other and you’re someone who’s always keeping an eye out for brand-building and revenue potential. You’re obsessed with kids’ content, and you’re hungry to help further grow a start-up.

Flexibility is key in this position — you’re someone who thrives from switching between different roles, and between big vs. small picture discussions. You’re willing and happy to adapt to the changing needs of a developing department while maintaining consistent creative professionalism and a positive, collaborative attitude.

You’re a highly reliable and independent worker, but also an excellent team player who can quickly switch between independent work and a team environment. You feel comfortable working quickly and efficiently on deadline and maintain a can-do attitude even under pressure, and you’re eager to be a key member of the team and star player whom others look up to. You’re obsessed with the details, and pride yourself on proactively coming up with creative solutions to problems quickly. You’re passionate about The Dodo and digital media as a whole, you’re energized by change, and you’re eager to stay two steps ahead of rapidly evolving best practices. Most importantly, have a relatable, childlike sense of fun, and a deep appreciation for children’s media. You want to help expand The Dodo and play an important role in growing our brand and business.

Who we’re looking for:

You’re an independent, creative thinker and writer
You know how to tell a story that’s both verbally and visually engaging
You understand the Dodo voice, and are excited about bringing it to a new generation
You are passionate about both animals and kids, and can present animal content in a fun, super entertaining, emotionally compelling way that’s tailor-made for digital platforms and a young audience
You understand the importance of business development, and are always thinking how creative can support business growth and vice versa
You are excited to help develop a new team within the larger team
You are a self-starter who can also take critical feedback well and work in a highly collaborative environment
You are motivated by data and are always aiming to exceed performance goals
Your brain is always, always asking, “How can we make this better?”

5+ years of relevant experience (management experience is a plus)
Deep understanding of the children’s media industry and market
Outstanding, consistent writing and scripting skills
An understanding of what makes children excited, and ability to speak in a fun, digestible, emotionally compelling way that they understand
Familiarity with social media platforms and distribution strategies, particularly on YouTube
Ability to independently multitask, prioritize projects, and communicate progress
Ability to rapidly transition between independent and collaborative work
A reliable, consistent sense of professionalism, balanced with a great sense of humor
