Senior Director, Research & Evaluation - Learning Technologies

Status:  Full-time//Exempt/Project (Funded by a grant for up to 2-years)


This position will provide strategic leadership, oversight, and primary project management of research activities focused on measuring the educational impact of PBS KIDS media, as well as the measurement of children’s knowledge, skills, and practices via their engagement PBS KIDS media. It will also direct and manage the Game‐based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Assessment Project. This person will provide research strategy and oversight across a wider set of PBS KIDS educational research efforts.    


Essential duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Lead and project manage the grant-funded Game‐based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Assessment Project.
  • Project manage a cross-functional team (content manager, product managers, producers, game developers, software engineers) focused on the development of three new games for preschoolers that will teach and measure Social and Emotional Learning skills - specifically self-awareness and social-awareness.
  • Oversee research and development activities with university research partners such as UCLA / CRESST related to the measurement of educational impact and the measurement of child knowledge, skills, and practices.
  • Undertake literature review and synthesis to promote knowledge sharing and dissemination activities (internal and external) as needed by the project.
  • Develop a PBS KIDS research strategy working toward the goal of measuring Kindergarten Readiness: measurement of educational impact and the measurement of child knowledge, skills, and practices.
  • Consult on wider PBS Children’s Media & Education educational research strategies, designs, implementations.

Requirements for success:

  • Masters or PhD in child development, early childhood education, children’s media studies, developmental psychology or appropriate related field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the modern literature in a field related to the education requirements, preferably social and emotional learning for young children.
  • Expertise in relevant research design and methodologies related to the measurement of educational impact of children’s media.
  • Experience overseeing the development of educational digital interactive media for young children.
  • Experience conducting or overseeing research into educational impact (typically randomized control trials with multiple conditions and external criterion measures such as standardized assessments,) as well as research into usability and appeal,  and engagement outcomes.
  • Experience running and managing large and complicated distributed multi-party interdisciplinary projects.
  • Experience working with or overseeing data analyses on large, complicated educational data sets.
  • Experience presenting research and ideas to broad audiences, including key stakeholders such as senior managers, executives, and other researchers.
  • Experience working closely with foundations and/or managing relationships with grant project officers to ensure program success.
  • Project oversight and management skills including work scopes, contracting, strategic plans, project plans, project timelines, day-today management and communications, responsibility and accountability management.
  • Strong skills and understanding related to the various aspects of the digital interactive media production process, including the roles of curriculum, content, product, platforms and technology project personnel.
  • Understanding of and expertise with data analysis related to measuring educational impact.
  • Strong verbal and presentation skills, ability to present complex information in an accessible and understandable way.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills, ability to anticipate future research needs given the dramatically changing digital landscape.
