Up to 25 travel grants are available for journalists to participate as Reporting Fellows in a two-day immersion program aimed at exploring how fines and fees imposed on justice-involved Americans have created modern-day “debtors’ prisons” and driven up incarceration and poverty.

The “Cash Register Justice” program, scheduled March 7-8, 2019 at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, will bring journalists together with leading experts, researchers, policymakers and justice practitioners for an intensive practice-oriented course of seminars and roundtable discussions designed to provide research, contacts and ideas that can reinforce future reporting.

Selected fellows will receive all-expense paid accommodation and travel to New York for the conference. Working journalists who write, broadcast or report online for U.S.-based outlets are eligible to apply. Deadline for applications is February 15.

This fellowship is part of the ongoing programs of media skills training in emerging criminal justice issues organized by John Jay’s Center on Media, Crime and Justice.
