AFAR Media, the critically acclaimed travel media brand headquartered in San Francisco and New York, is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic digital content director to join our team. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of editorial experience; preference will be given to those candidates who have led growing digital content teams. Deep experience in the travel category preferred. This role reports directly to the VP, Editor in Chief.

Job duties include:

  • Develop and implement an overarching digital content strategy that ladders up to the overall company strategy
  • Lead a bicoastal team of 8 full-time digital writers and editors
  • Direct daily travel news content and travel guides content on AFAR.com (with a key focus on growth)
  • Establish and oversee digital edit calendars; oversee budgets
  • Drive audience acquisition and retention through creative packaging of AFAR’s content through email newsletters, social channels, SEO optimization, and strategic partnerships
  • Work closely and highly collaboratively with the product, audience development, and engineering teams to communicate needs, optimize content, prioritize requests, and test new content ideas
  • Works closely with sales and marketing to generate new content franchises and ensure existing programs are sellable
  • Consistently be bringing new ideas to the table based on industry trends and insights
  • Be a key decision maker on AFAR’s nascent video strategy

Requirements:

  • Confident strategic and creative thinker who wants to roll up his/her sleeves
  • Managerial, leadership, and team-building experience
  • Strong professional knowledge and understanding of SEO, content optimization, social media, video strategy, and web analytics
  • Be open-minded and willing to test new things with a focus on metrics and results
  • Be comfortable with and interested in using new tools to create quality content on a regular basis  
  • Must be a proactive self-starter with a collaborative spirit
  • Able to recruit, cultivate, and retain top staff and freelance talent
  • Excellent organizational, communication, delegation, and time management skills
  • Be both a workhorse and an ideas person who is excited to work with multiple departments (product, audience dev, engineering, sales and marketing)
  • Must find satisfaction in both contributing ideas and doing the work to make them happen
  • Must be detail-oriented and deadline-savvy
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, leadership, and presentation skills
  • Must have a passion for travel, and be interested in conceptualizing new and interesting ways to look at travel.
