Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a criminal justice reporter to join its Greater New York staff. The reporter in this position plays a crucial role in the Journal's breaking news coverage in the New York metropolitan area and nationally.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with boundless curiosity and creativity. We want someone who has a knack for making federal and local law enforcement sources and can call them at a moment's notice when a bomb threat is made, a steam pipe explodes, or mysterious blue light illuminates the city skyline.

A large part of the beat is covering the New York Police Department, keeping a critical eye on its crime-fighting policies while providing context to crime rates. The reporter should go beyond the traditional role of crime coverage to tell broader stories. Looking for new ways to tell stories, whether through data, charts or audio, online and in print, should always be in the reporter's mind.

If you apply, please briefly explain your vision for the beat and how it would fit in the Greater New York section and nationally. Also, send five of your best clips. The reporter who is hired will join a talented and collegial team of reporters covering New York, New Jersey and Connecticut on a daily basis.
