The Maryland Institute College of Art is pleased to accept applications for the Technology Research Assistant, a unique position within MICA's Graduate Research Lab starting June 2019.
This position serves as a stepping stone for emerging artists working with technology who have finished their academic training and are looking for a creative and stimulating environment for continued artistic and professional growth. This Assistant position provides the artist with a set of professional development opportunities and critical resources that are designed to help advance their career and artistic practice. Candidates are expected to take an active role in supporting the daily functions of the Graduate Research Lab, as well as, contribute to MICA's Graduate community at large.
About the Graduate Research Lab:
The Graduate Research Lab (Grad Lab) is the central technology resource for MICA graduate students who view technology as a critical aspect of their art making practice. The Grad Lab is comprised of computer workstations, an Electronics Project Room, a Print Lab, a Sound Studio, Video Editing Suites and an equipment checkout with a wide variety of video, audio, multimedia, and still camera equipment for checkout. The lab is staffed by a rotating group of Graduate Student Technical Assistants (Techs) and is headed by the Graduate Research Lab Coordinator. Students can use the Grad Lab's resources to conduct their own research in technology through using the Lab's resources, attending workshops and making appointments for one-on-one assistance (For more info visit: http://graduate.mica.edu/lab/).
In addition to supporting regular lab functions, the Technology Research Assistant will use Graduate Research Lab resources to pursue a technology-based research project. While courses are in session the successful candidate will provide 20 hours per week of coverage for the Graduate Research Lab's Print Lab, Checkout, and Computer Lab facilities During interim periods between academic semesters the Technology Research Assistant will be free to conduct a research project, culminating in a public presentation to the MICA Graduate community. Additionally, the Technology Research Assistant is expected to lead at least one Graduate level workshop on a topic relating to their area of inquiry employing technology available through the Graduate Research Lab.
Terms of Appointment:
Appointment is for a 1 year non-renewable period. During the appointment the Assistant will provide coverage at The Graduate Research Lab's Print Lab, Checkout, and Computer Lab facilities (15-20 hours per week).
- Perform large format print jobs and equipment checkouts
- Help to maintain the Computer LabAssist student
- Provide support for Graduate Research Lab Coordinator
- The position is paid at an hourly rate.
- Assistant may be reimbursed up to $1000 to cover travel, materials, or other costs associated with research and professional development.
- The Assistant will have the opportunity to lead workshop(s) on a topic relating to their area of research employing available Grad Lab technology.
- Assistant will enjoy access to select Grad Lab resources based on needs proposed in their Research project.
Research & Mentorship:
The Research Technology Assistant will conduct a creative research project during the time of the position and share findings with Graduate community, including a summary report which will be archived in the Graduate Research Lab's Research Database. Additionally, Assistant will receive support and guidance from staff and opportunities to participate in Grad Lab programming such as workshops.

Eligibility and Selection:
Significant background and demonstrated interest in the intersection of the arts and technology. Experience and expert proficiency with technology employed in research project. Outstanding research project proposal.
- A substantive and original letter of intent including stated interest in the position and how it relates to current artistic practice
- 1-2 page research project proposal including project description and scope, budget, equipment and space needs
- Proposal for Workshop Topic(s)
- Minimum 5-10 samples of recent work
- Completed MICA Job Application
