Marketing Compliance Associate

The Penguin Random House Legal Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to join its Digital Marketing and Privacy team, which is responsible for providing compliance guidance on marketing, advertising and data privacy issues. This paralegal position requires the ability to conduct critical analyses and provide business-friendly advice, under the guidance of the team attorneys. The successful paralegal must have excellent oral and written communication skills, superb people skills, the ability to understand new areas of law quickly and meet the needs of a diverse client group, and the flexibility to juggle a wide range of assignments simultaneously. This is a unique opportunity to work with a highly visible team with growing responsibilities across the entire company including all marketing and corporate groups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Provide compliance guidance and recommendations to marketers on day-to-day online and social media campaigns and new marketing initiatives
* Advise marketers on structuring compliant sweepstakes/contests, including drafting and/or reviewing official rules, promotional copy and co-sponsorship agreements
* Participate in data protection and privacy compliance matters and projects on an ad hoc basis, including advising on data-based marketing risks, responding to consumer information requests, managing data processing records and reviewing privacy policies
* Participate in drafting and presenting policies, guidelines, presentations and trainings on a variety of topics, including sweepstakes, influencers, email marketing and data privacy
* Other ad hoc projects as defined by the Legal Department (e.g., management of legal technology tools)
* Minimal administrative duties (e.g., answering phones, calendar management)



EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

* An individual with an interest in marketing, advertising, publishing and law
* Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for seeing projects through
* Experience setting up and managing systemized processes and providing direct support for Penguin Random House’s marketing groups
* Candidates with at least 3 or more years of marketing, advertising or legal experience are preferred
* Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to take ownership of on-going projects, take initiative, exercise independent judgment and problem solve
* Excellent organizational and project management skills, interpersonal/communication skills, technology skills as well as attention to detail are required
* Candidates must have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities
* Understanding of CRM trends and best practices is a plus
* Ideal candidate will have media industry experience, ideally at a marketing or advertising agency
