The NBC News and MSNBC consumer insights research team works closely with program research to understand the why behind ratings. We use a range of quantitative (surveys, dial tests) and qualitative methods (focus groups, online communities, content analysis) to understand audience connections to NBC News brands and MSNBC programs to inform editorial and marketing efforts. We also work with internal ad sales and digital clients, as needed.

Responsibilities:Accountable for all aspects of consumer intelligence gathering (quantitative and qualitative market research projects, analysis of secondary research data, and occasional social media monitoring)
  • Be point of contact for other groups at NBC News: With marketing and editorial, understanding their learning needs, coordinating the research process with them and communicating insights in actionable ways; With legal to manage vendor contracts
  • Manage the day-to-day responsibilities of research projects, including brand trackers, being the first point of contact for vendors and maintaining organization, contracts and timelines across projectsManage primary research projects from start to finish, helping frame objectives, developing research design and sampling plans, creating research instruments (surveys, discussion guides, screeners) and analyzing results and writing reports. When appropriate, work with and manage an outside research partnerDevelop executive reports and presentations: writing top-lines, detailed reports, and oversee production of video reporting
  • Accommodate ad hoc requests for data and insights through new projects and mining of past studies or secondary research
  • Conduct landscape reviews of existing secondary research to help internal clients stay on top of consumer trendsWork with the wider consumer research team to support the NBC News groups’ editorial and marketing teams

    • Minimum 8 years’ experience in media or market research, including working for a client-side media company or market research supplier
    • Strong experience with quantitative research, including survey design, sampling plans and analysis, and brand trackers
    • Experience with qualitative research, including focus groups, conducting in-depth interviews, analyzing qualitative research and cultural analyses
    • Previous market research project management experience; clear understanding of project set-up, recruiting
    • Experience managing vendor relations

    Desired Qualifications:
    • MA in communications, social psychology or sociology preferred
    • Excellent writing skills, along with strong analytical capability
    • Ability to learn various tools and interfaces to program surveys, manipulate and download data
    • Excellent storytelling and writing skills to create visually compelling presentations and bring data and consumers to life through PowerPoint presentations
    • A passion for understanding data in the context of news business trends and the broader cultural moment, and implications for NBC News editorial and marketing
    • Solid deductive and creative thinker with the ability to synthesize key insights from multiple sources (primary and secondary) and succinctly share information for strategic decisions
    • Ability to work autonomously and under pressure to keep projects moving forward
    • Ability to multiple task and work across several brands and projects simultaneously
