The News Literacy Project (NLP) is looking for a strategically minded senior vice president of communications to lead our communications team, which is responsible for expanding our online presence (including website, newsletters, social media, videos and graphics), managing media and public relations, and supporting other NLP teams with their communications needs. If you’re interested in applying your skills and experience to a fast-paced, growing nonprofit, this is a great opportunity to oversee the external voice of an organization serving teachers and students throughout the United States and around the world.

About NLP

Founded in 2008, the News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that empowers educators to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in everything they read, watch and hear. Our central offering is the Checkology® virtual classroom, an online e-learning hub. Since the platform was introduced in 2016, more than 17,800 teachers have registered to use it in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. territories and 104 other countries. More information can be found at newslit.org.

About the position

NLP’s senior vice president of communications must be a strong manager and strategist who is also an expert in media and public relations. You will be conversant in digital media culture and journalism and enthusiastic about helping people learn online. There is intense public interest in NLP’s work, and we are experiencing tremendous growth. You will hit the ground running, be unafraid to experiment, and have high standards, an easygoing nature and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. This position will be a member of the NLP leadership team and report to the chief operating officer.

In this job, you will:

  • Drive and manage NLP media relations in both the general and education media landscapes.
  • Oversee the training of internal spokespeople for key speaking opportunities and commentary.
  • Stay thoroughly current on the state of media and journalism coverage of media literacy and misinformation in order to keep track of the conversations and issues in which NLP should be included.
  • Refine and execute the NLP communications and media strategy. This includes outlining, by quarter, specific tactics and outlets reflecting industry events and NLP activities while making room for opportunities that quickly emerge.
  • Oversee the NLP communications team and contractors, who will, in addition to executing the organizational communications plan, work simultaneously on a variety of projects in a “client service”-type setting for several internal teams, including education, network and partnerships, educator services and development.
  • Serve on NLP’s leadership team, adding your voice to the consideration of a variety of strategically significant issues and act as the staff lead to the board of directors’ communications committee.

About you

The ideal candidate will have most or all of the following qualities/qualifications:

  • Hands-on media relations experience, a good reputation with reporters and a well-developed network of editors and reporters at news and/or education outlets.
  • 8+ years of communications work on behalf of a relevant nonprofit and/or news organization, including the ability to plan and execute projects personally.
  • A working understanding of how to use social media on behalf of a business or organization and its value in amplification and public conversation.
  • Experience with digital communications channels, including social media, email newsletters and podcasts.
  • A keen understanding of story hooks and the ability to package and repurpose information, events, findings, etc. into stories across channels and platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in gaining media coverage and in media response, and a proven record in creating pitches tailored to specific media outlets and their audiences.
  • Strong ability to create team cohesion through clear yet collaborative techniques.
  • Strong ability to function as part of the organization’s leadership and to offer sound advice for the good of the whole organization.
  • Strong ability to communicate NLP initiatives, news and policy, including decisions with which you disagree.
  • Strong commitment to the cause of news literacy and education.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and stay within budget.
  • Experience with a virtual work environment (in terms of both technology tools and personal skills).

Compensation and benefits

The salary is competitive, based on experience and qualifications. NLP offers outstanding benefits, including health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan with employer match, generous time off and more. While this position works largely virtually, preferred candidates will live in or near Washington, D.C., where NLP is based.
