The new NBC News/MSNBC podcast unit is seeking an audio engineer to work on an upcoming news and politics podcast. The audio engineer will work closely with podcast producers to develop audio standards and best practices and to create a technical workflow for the news and politics podcast and other podcasts in our portfolio.
This is a chance to help create an “audio first” culture within a new and growing unit.
This person will work with the executive producer of the upcoming news and politics podcast to shape the “sound” of the show. This includes ensuring high quality recordings, creating audio production workflows for show producers, sourcing music, sound design, scoring and mixing each episode.
This person will also be expected to troubleshoot studio problems, including connection issues, offsite recordings, and issues with Pro Tools.
While technical and engineering expertise will be the primary focus of this position, an interest in news and editorial production is desired.
Oversee technical aspects of recording sessions, in studio at 30 Rock, as well as with reporters and producers in the field and offsite mobile recording set-ups. Maintain and help develop best practices for offsite recordings, file storage and management, and interoperable workflow systems.Edit, mix, and score sound-rich daily podcast consisting of several segments, with interviews often happening in different locations.Work closely with producers and hosts on segment edits, within show scripts and within ProTools.Act as first line of defense in troubleshooting studio and Pro Tools workflow issuesHelp train and assist staff in studio procedures, Pro Tools operation, and field recording best practicesMaintain studios and help manage team audio software and plugin updatesProvide expert audio technical support for team of producers and editorsManage remote equipment check out for producers and reportersHelp source and/or compose original music for podcastsWork directly with producers to assess and clean up poor audio using iZotope RXContribute to conversations about workflow improvements and standardization across shows.
• 2+ years experience as audio engineer required - radio and/or podcast experience preferred.
• Technical expertise in ProTools and Apple computers
• Experience using music in narrative audio productions
• Knowledge of studio and field recording equipment, as well as connection methods such as ISDN and Comrex connections
• Ability to work in a fast paced newsroom and adjust to breaking news and scheduling demands
• Organizational skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to quickly, calmly and creatively troubleshoot complex issues under pressure
• Collaborative attitude and strong communication skills; with the ability to communicate complex technical information to people with technical and nontechnical backgrounds
