Simmons-Boardman Publishing Corp. is seeking an Editor-in-Chief for Railway Track & Structures, one of our industry-leading business-to-business transportation trade journals, based in New York City or Chicago. RT&S publishes a monthly magazine (print and digital), as well as digital content including breaking news, and daily and weekly electronic newsletters. The industry RT&S covers is dynamic and growing, and there is technology and equipment that the ideal candidate must be willing to master. The Editor-in-Chief writes news and feature articles, edits articles from contributors and acts as their liaison, posts on social media, works with the art and production departments in producing the monthly magazine, handles special projects including but not limited to conferences and webinars, and manages day-to-day business. The Managing Editor reports to this position. The individual also serves on an industry board.
Travel for this position is around 33% percent of the time and includes meeting with railroad executives and association board meetings. The Editor-in-Chief also represents the magazine at industry trade shows, reports to the publisher and advises the sales staff to assist them in business development.
The successful candidate, in addition to being an excellent reporter, writer and editor, will be someone comfortable with technology, a quick study willing to immerse themselves in learning the industry we cover and develop an expertise for which our publication has been known for more than 110 years, and upon which it bases its reputation. The position requires a minimum of 10 years editorial experience. Expertise in rail transportation and/or civil engineering is a plus, but not mandatory.
