MDRC is a leading social science and education policy research organization that focuses on improving the well-being of low-income people. We are seeking an Editor with excellent copyediting, line/substantive editing, and writing skills to be a key member of our Publications Department, which produces more than 80 research reports and other publications per year.


  • Under the supervision of the Director of Publications, editing, copyediting, and proofreading social science and education research reports, briefs, and short documents for publication, as well as materials for MDRC’s website (including infographics), using MDRC’s editorial style conventions, which are based primarily on the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Trafficking multiple publications through the editing and publication process, working with authors, research assistants, freelance editors, report production/design staff, and printers.
  • Participating in prepublication reviews of report drafts.
  • Writing introductions, summaries, and promotional and other materials for MDRC publications and website that make the findings of social science and education research reports accessible to a lay audience of policymakers and media.


Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of editorial experience required. Candidate must be highly organized, comfortable working against deadlines and juggling multiple projects, have excellent copyediting skills, and able to pay careful attention to detail. Extensive experience with Windows and Microsoft Word’s Tracking feature is necessary. Experience editing graphic and tabular material is preferable. Experience editing subject matter related to social policy or education is a plus.

The position is based in MDRC’s New York City office. Salary contingent on experience. Comprehensive fringe benefits offered.
