MSI Information Services is seeking a creative and highly organized Managing Editor for two of its flagship brands, Library Journal & School Library Journal. The ideal candidate is an excellent, hands-on managing editor and team leader who is well-versed in editorial management for multi-media properties and the dynamics of digital-first publishing. This role will oversee the timely and high quality production of a range of content distributed through the websites, print magazines, and e-newsletters, as well as related marketing collateral and special projects.

The Managing Editor will drive and manage schedules and related budgets; ensure adherence to house style and excellence in quality; edit and proof copy in various stages of development; oversee the art/production team; introduce solutions to known and emerging issues; mentor all in-house contributors; effectively collaborate across departments as needed to speed innovation and process improvement; and provide vision into the evolving media landscape. The Managing Editor will bring a combination of practical skills focused on operations, editing, and team building.

This role reports to the Editorial Director, Library Journal & School Library Journal.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

—Plan and manage daily operations to ensure timely and high quality delivery of content against digital and print deadlines

—Edit and proof copy at various stages in high volume environment

—Oversee and improve proofreading procedures

—Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style, and tone

—Supervise art and production team

—Work with the Editorial Director to help shape the editorial vision for the brands

—Contribute collaboratively with management team and across departments

—Manage schedules and enforce deadlines (for editorial teams, art, and production, etc.)

—Introduce innovation to the team, regarding tools, processes, and to reflect industry best practices

—Participate in live and online events as necessary to help build the brands 

—Support the growth of audience for the brands across all platforms

—Additional editorial responsibilities as necessary

REQUIREMENTS:

—Experience in a managing editor role, with ability to juggle high-volume content under deadline

—Commitment to editorial integrity and quality

— Exceptional copywriting and editing skills

—Facility with best practices in digital and print media publishing

—Proven ability in planning and coordinating people and operations

—Excellent organizational and leadership skills

—Outstanding communication and people skills, with a commitment to collaboration

—Track record of independent, authoritative management of competing schedules toward on-time delivery

—Masterful attention to detail and an innate sense of curiosity

—An entrepreneurial and flexible attitude toward new opportunities and challenges

—The ideal candidate will understand the importance of reflecting the brands’ values, including embracing a position of leadership in the field related to the evolving best practices equity, diversity, and inclusion

—Knowledge of or background in libraries, publishing, and/or education preferred.
