Overview

The Communications Manager plays a central role in the development and execution of Company-wide external communications initiatives. This includes strategic collaboration with diverse stakeholders across HMH to develop and execute successful public relations initiatives through various channels, from owned and earned digital platforms to news media. The manager works to amplify and elevate the HMH brand and create opportunities for HMH’s thought leaders to be a part of national and regional conversations around education. Working across channels, the manager will ensure that HMH’s external-facing communications align with The Learning Company brand and values, and position HMH as a leader in K-12 learning. The manager will both uphold HMH’s reputation, rooted in 180+ years of history, and create a new narrative that reflects HMH’s role in the future of the learning.

Working within HMH’s small but agile Corporate Communications team, the manager must be able to handle multiple demanding projects simultaneously, often within a short timeframe, all while developing and nurturing relationships with both internal clients and external third-parties, including news media and reporters. The manager must be a talented writer who can adapt in style and voice and deliver thoughtful, creative content with a laser-like focus on quality and attention to detail. The manager should be passionate about the current media landscape and a voracious consumer of news, with a special focus on education outlets and relevant beat reporters, and be able to use this knowledge to contribute to the development of effective media relations strategy as well as engaging and fresh thought leadership commentary. 

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage external communications on behalf of HMH; this includes writing press releases, media advisories, pitch letters, talking points, briefing materials, blog posts and more
  • Contribute to the development of HMH’s thought leadership efforts
  • Develop strategy for media outreach and deliver on earned coverage to support HMH initiatives and business milestones, including PR support for executives and others, program and partnership announcements and key company news
  • Manage and own team media monitoring and measurement efforts, including oversight of online reporting tools, day-to-day media monitoring, and delivery of quarterly coverage reports
  • Manage internal stakeholder relationships to create effective external communications campaigns while ensuring quality, clarity and value is added to all output
  • Work closely with third-party PR agency partners to deliver results
  • Elevate and protect HMH’s brand reputation, support crisis communications response efforts as needed
  • In partnership with external communications team, manage ongoing awards submissions and discover and submit HMH thought leaders for speaking opportunities

Requirements

  • Ability to balance and manage the needs of multiple constituencies, manage multiple deadlines and work well under pressure including delivering exceptional work under tight deadlines
  • Excellent writing skills; ability to distill complex information into simple, elegant and easy-to-understand communications
  • Demonstrated success in building media relationship and securing media coverage
  • Ability to act as a true team player and work effectively in a collaborative environment across functional groups
  • Strong project management and client service skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to serve as quality control for communications prior to dissemination
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Good working knowledge of the AP Stylebook
  • Experience with PR monitoring tools a plus

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or Marketing
  • Minimum 5 years of professional work experience, with at least 2 years in communications, marketing, or related field 
  • Experience in communications-related role, preferably including prior work in public relations or media relations role; agency or industry experience preferred
