Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Media Relations, the Associate Director will be part of a team at the University of California, Office of the President in the External Relations and Communications Division. The Associate Director is responsible for the following:
- develops and oversees media strategies; develops and drafts communications plans and strategies for proactive and reactive scenarios;
- handle, review and ensure accurate responses to media inquiries;
- develops proactive strategies to cultivate and maintain strong media relationships and works with others in department to develop placements in all forms of media including digital, print and TV;
- develops successful news social media strategies and approaches for both promotion and dissemination of news information;
- monitor and manage issues an crises; may serve a spokesperson for key issues
- work across UCOP and campuses to identify opportunities and positive stories for earned media;
- continually identify ways enhance the efficiency and operations of the media relations department;
- works to develop and improve ongoing metrics of media relations efforts;
- staff senior leaders at important UC events.
The ideal candidate will have sharp media instincts coupled with consistently good judgment; be able to write and edit well a wide-range of materials for various audiences; work collaboratively and be of service to other areas of External Relations and Communications (Government Relations, Marketing Communications, Executive Communications, etc.) to support ongoing and emerging strategies with media outreach; operate very efficiently under tight deadlines while juggling multiple tasks and projects; have extensive experience working within complex organizations with senior leaders; exhibit a passion for meaningful, mission-driven work.

Duty 1: Support Executive Director and others in department in developing, overseeing, and implementing media strategy on systemwide matters for the university. Assist in managing a wide variety of high-profile issues and crises. Help the department better balance proactive and reactive media strategy and response. Serve as a systemwide spokesperson. Foster positive relationships with media outlets and reporters.
Duty 2: Ensure timely, accurate and strategic responses to high volume of media inquiries by handling those from larger outlets, while vetting draft responses from media strategists. Ensure coordinated messaging with other departments in the division, other divisions, and UC campuses.
Duty 4: Write well and quickly, with minimal editing and feedback necessary. Accurately capture the "voice" of UC. Draft internal communications plans and external statements, op-eds, and other high-profile collateral for senior leaders. Help review and copy edit the team's work and writing to ensure consistently high-quality collateral.
Duty 5: Serve as the stand-in for executive director as necessary: attend senior-level meetings, staff and support senior leaders at important UC events, draft briefing materials for the president, manage the Daily Clips Editor and support the department staff.
Duty 30: Identify ways to optimize the effectiveness, functionality and efficiency of the department and implement improvements. Help create additional structure and resources to allow better editorial planning and organization by the team. Find opportunities for the department to add more value to UCOP and campuses. Establish social media strategy for news and metrics-reporting mechanisms to evaluate effectiveness.
At least five years of experience in strategic communications, public affairs or media relations, along with demonstrated history of working in high-pressure environment with constant deadlines.
Solid media instincts. Extensive knowledge of the concepts, trends and dynamics of media outlets, reporters and the news cycle. Prior, positive relationships with reporters and outlets are a plus. Digital experience and use of social media channels is essential.
Exceptional oral and written communications skills, including strong editing skills. Experience and proven ability to serve effectively as a university spokesperson. History of stellar writing under strict deadlines.
Experience in crafting effective, comprehensive, and creative media relations plans for projects, events and campaigns with metrics and reporting capabilities. Ability to coordinate well with others in carrying out those plans.
Sound judgment and critical thinking skills. Ability to provide well-reasoned, highly informed and strategic counsel to the department and senior leaders.
Ability to quickly cultivate strong relationships not only within an organization, but also with external clients and stakeholders, including reporters.
Reliable, trustworthy and operates consistently with the utmost integrity. Can foster commitment, trust and teamwork within department and division.
Master's degree in communications, public affairs or journalism.
Proven ability to manage through influence and partner with other functions for key outcomes which support other functional objectives.
