American Association for the Advancement of Science has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Multimedia to join our Office of Public Programs. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, you will be responsible for managing the production of quality multimedia offerings for Science and AAAS. You will handle editorial content decisions for multimedia, collaborate with other departments, and oversee video and audio production tasks, multimedia strategy, budgeting, staff and freelancers, and workflow creation.

What You’ll Do  

  • Oversee content and workflow for multimedia related to research, news, series videos and the weekly Science Podcast. 
  • Hire freelancers as needed for scripts, video production, and audio production.  Write and record narration using studio equipment and audio editing software.
  • Edit and animate videos using Adobe Premier and Adobe AfterEffects. 
  • Review scripts, listen to draft audio segments, and review video drafts. 
  • Coordinate with editors, news staff, journal authors, web producers, and programmatic staff regarding video and audio projects. 
  • Produce videos related to research and news content. 
  • Plan and act as a producer/interviewer for ongoing series. 
  • Use editorial judgment in selecting video topics and interview subjects; plan shoots and travel; interview researchers on-site. 
  • Track and propose budgets, oversee vendor contracts, analytics, and reporting, in conjunction with OPP Manager of Business Operations. 
  • Attend meetings and events. 
  • Manage 3 multimedia producer and (at times) a multimedia intern.   

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a scientific discipline and/or 3 to 7 years of experience in a science communication role. 
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in video and audio production, equipment, and software.  
  • 2 to 3 years of supervisory experience is preferred. 
  • Experience in audio/video equipment operation, live event, and multimedia production.  
  • Ability to read and understand scientific research papers and news reports. 
  • Experience in science writing for video, audio, and web. 
  • Familiarity with online scholarly publishing and/or news publishing.
  • Experience in using recording equipment, Garage Band, and Adobe Audition to produce segments and full show mix.
  • Ability to edit videos in Adobe Premier and Adobe AfterEffects. 
  • Experience in interviewing a diverse range of speakers. 
  • Experience in tracking and managing budgets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
