Director of Marketing and Communications

Mission Critical: This position is integral to the vision and mission of United Synagogue as the Communications and Marketing Department serves as the central internal agency for the organization.
Position Purpose: Reporting to the CEO/COO, and serving as an integral member of the senior management, the Director of Marketing and Communications will be responsible for the development, integration and implementation of a varied and broad range of online and printed communication, media, and marketing activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of USCJ. The goal is to advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The Director will supervise and direct the workflow of marketing, traditional and online communications, and social staff and independent contractors by assigning job tasks, facilitating interdepartmental communications and managing external communications.
A key focus will be promoting participation in the programs of the Teen Engagement Department, USY and Nativ, the college-preparatory gap year program.
These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Develop, implement and evaluate an integrated strategic communications plan to advance USCJ’s brand identity and broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of is programs across key stakeholder audiences.
Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
Implement social media plan and strategy
Work closely with all USCJ departments to ensure consistency, product quality and economies of scale and continuity in all of its communication distribution channels, as well as coordinate all e-newsletters and social media
Work closely with Human Resources to ensure consistency of message to USCJ staff as it relates to policy, employee engagement and internal information dissemination
Promote USCJ as the voice of wise and rational commentary on contemporary issues
Create a marketing/public relations strategy that will allow USCJ leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers
Lead the marketing and communications effort for the USCJ global convention held every two years
Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Decide who, where and when to disseminate
Put communications vehicles in place to crate momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities
Manage the development, distribution and maintenance of all collateral including, but not limited to e-newsletters, brochures and USCJ’s and USY’s websites.
Serve as a lead point person on media interactions. Prioritize media opportunities and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material
Engage and cultivate press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding USCJ programs, special events, and other projects
Serve as communications counselor to USCJ and USY leadership
Recruit and manage a communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy
Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality
Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, set objectives and evaluation metrics, conduct annual performance appraisals
USCJ is seeking an accomplished Director of Communications who has at least 7 years of communications experience, ideally in an “in-house’ leadership role within a complex (number and variety of constituents) nonprofit entity and covering areas such as website content, newsletter and donor communications. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages and disseminate it to the right audiences through the test distribution channels is critical.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing or a related field.
Highly collaborative style: experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently..
Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to ‘manage by influence’
High energy, maturity and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants and other supporters
Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
Experience in the teen and/or young adult market.
Culturally literate in the of Conservative Judaism movement
