The Creative Director will lead The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s new in-house marketing agency that brings together design resources to produce best-in-class digital, video and print advertising creative for the AJC and its customers. This individual will lead the team responsible for translating research, customer insights and company strategy into powerful brand stories, impactful and innovative marketing campaigns and collateral that engage our customers and community, drive consumer and advertising revenue and motivate employees. The director will work with a sense of purpose to support the mission and the essential role of local journalism in Atlanta. At the same time, will work with a commitment to serve local advertiser customers with campaign strategy and creative that stands out and produce results. The high-end work generated by the AJC’s creative services team will set the standard for marketing excellence in the news media industry. Success in this position will take a strategic approach, cutting-edge digital techniques and media fluence, a wildly talent team, effective communications, strong collaboration and efficient processes.
Build, lead, coach and motivate a cross-discipline team of digitally oriented and highly experienced creative talent. The director will be successfully in recruiting and retaining top talent, create an environment where they are able to excel and produce great work.
Provide thought leadership at the strategic level and in customer-facing settings. The director must have a positive executive presence, strong interpersonal skills and be able to effectively translate strategy into big conceptual ideas, creative concepts and compelling campaigns.
Develop creative direction and deliver high quality, innovative, on-target B2B materials that position, promote and sell the AJC portfolio and audience value. Responsible for customer facing B2B collateral (including sales tool kit materials, microsites, proof-of-benefit/campaign wrap ups, etc.)
Develop high quality integrated digital advertising campaigns for select AJC accounts and prospects to fully leverage sales opportunities for Owned and Operated media placements.
Manage native sponsorship campaign development from concept through buy-in, execution/optimization and post-mortem reporting. Scope includes project planning, creative briefs, budget management and resource management. Develop a comprehensive project management process and system to successfully track and prioritize multiple job schedules to ensure client demands and deadlines are met
Serve as art director for revenue and loyalty projects and events. Work collaboratively with sales, content and marketing leaders to develop the presentation/staging, collateral packaging, sponsorship decks, etc.
Oversee relationships with external partners including ad production vendor to ensure quality, timeliness, cost efficiency and customer satisfaction. Manage freelance resources to supplement internal team where required.
Continue to build and shape creative expertise in-house that will support the AJC’s long-term strategy and revenue growth plans.
Drive the creative development of brand, consumer revenue, audience engagement marketing campaigns and collateral materials. Develop creative direction and deliver high quality, innovative and bold marketing and advertising campaigns that effectively use each marketing channel (digital, direct response, native, social, broadcast, etc.) to best reinforce market position, influence brand perception, drive reader engagement and generate subscriptions. Collaborate closely with content marketing/messaging/copy colleagues.
Increase video and native advertising creative capabilities to showcase our journalism within digital (web, social, email) channels - using advanced digital, video and interactive elements. Work collaboratively with editorial leadership and content marketing teams in framing and shaping the marketing story.
Package presentations for community organizations and other influencer groups. Work collaboratively with senior and editorial leadership teams in framing and shaping the visual story.
Seize topical and opportunistic moments and quickly execute creative needs necessary to launch digital campaigns (email, organic and paid social campaigns, video etc.)
Build a visual library of assets including photography (news and custom) that develop the look and feel for our marketing and create a consistent brand identity.
Partner with customer experience/technology team to infuse brand into experience design, ensuring all customer journeys are consistent with the brand design principles.
Network with advertising creative peers, outside media organizations and design professionals to stay on the cutting edge of the creative environment and mobile space and to learn from best practices/case studies, etc.
Partner with human resources team to infuse brand mission/vision into company culture, hiring and training practices and rewards programs.
Develop high quality creative to support talent acquisition (job postings, job fairs, etc.), employee communications presentations (QBRs, etc.), culture committee activities and employee awards and recognition initiatives (Presidents Circle, OTP, etc.).
Minimum 10 years of relevant professional communications, design, art direction experience leading and supervising creative talent in an agency, marketing services group or in-house corporate setting.
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline such as advertising, marketing, communications, design or other related field
Expertise in the areas of high-end digital, video and print creative strategy, design and execution. Strong fluency with Adobe Creative Suite; expertise and hands on experience in designing and coding for digital media (CSS/HTML5, flash, etc.).
Solid business acumen combined with a proven ability for creative thinking and proactive attitude around the development of big ideas, integrated campaigns and new approaches.
A naturally collaborative style that inspires teams to do their best work and a communications style and executive presence that provides value at the executive leadership/strategy level.
Preference for candidate with a broad portfolio of experience working with advertising sales, brand, consumer marketing and marcom teams and accounts.
Familiarity with using research and metrics to drive innovation, strategy and execution
Ability to handle multiple projects at once and meet tight deadlines
