ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation was established in 1937 and is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The Guggenheim international constellation of museums includes the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; and the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. In 2019, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum celebrates 60 years as an architectural icon and “temple of spirit” where radical art and architecture meet. 

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Deputy Director and Chief Communications Officer will provide progressive senior leadership to strengthen the public awareness, support of, and engagement with the Guggenheim Museum; ensure a strategic brand strategy aligned with overall objectives and activities; and communicate the complex and rich diversity of the Guggenheim Foundation’s international constellation of museums to its many constituencies of patrons and supporters worldwide.

This position leads a comprehensive portfolio of public-facing departments, directly overseeing three departments—Global Communications, Media and Public Relations, and Marketing— and providing collaborative strategic oversight of Digital Media, Interactive, and Graphic Design. The Deputy Director and Chief Communications Officer delivers proactive and strategic outreach and experiences across earned, owned, paid, and partnership channels in support of attendance, revenue and other institutional goals.

Key responsibilities include:

Leadership and Strategy

  • Responsible for the quality and integrity of communications for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Guggenheim Foundation and for stewarding the Guggenheim brand.
  • Develop strategies to influence public understanding and engagement with the Guggenheim Museum and its program; build brand awareness, positive sentiment and institutional reputation.
  • Provide strategic direction, advice and plans for all aspects of Global Communications, including interactive design and content, graphic design, digital and social media content and strategy, public and media relations, and internal and external communications. 
  • Oversee development of annual marketing strategy and paid advertising campaigns to meet attendance and revenue goals; identify and develop priority audiences, with a focus on diversifying audience groups.
  • Advise, counsel and assist in the identification and achievement of institutional goals.

Communications

  • Develop and deploy messaging in support of the Guggenheim Foundation’s international constellation of museums and activities; foster coordination and information-sharing among communications colleagues throughout the Guggenheim Foundation institutions world-wide.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the Guggenheim Museum and Foundation and its Director; develop public-facing strategies for Foundation initiatives and travelling exhibitions; manage relationships with outside PR firm(s); manage high-level media relationships.
  • Counsel and advise executive staff and Board members on major reputational issues as well as serve as a key advisor on the crisis-management team and manage crisis communications.
  • Develop Executive communications for Director, Board members and other key staff; provide coaching and preparation for high-stakes interviews, meetings, and other institutional moments.

Branding and Visitor Experience

  • Responsible for maintaining the Guggenheim’s visual, editorial and brand identity across all communications platforms.
  • Craft strategic marketing and audience-development plans to maximize participation by all constituencies; conduct market research to identify opportunities for growth and revenue.
  • Work with colleagues in Advancement, Curatorial, Education/Public Programs, and Visitor Experience to maximize all opportunities to initiate, support and promote programs.

Partnerships and Management

  • Provide vision and leadership for a large team of marketing, global communications, and public relations staff in New York; supervise, evaluate, recruit, manage, and develop team members.
  • Supervise in-house and agency creative development, production and distribution of all related marketing, communications and online materials and products.
  • Act as a strategic partner with the Advancement Department to support the achievement of annual contributed income goals; support philanthropy and donor engagement through communications.
  • Develop and implement new business opportunities and strategic partnerships with for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer to develop the annual budget for reporting departments; plan, recommend, negotiate, administer and monitor appropriate budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

The successful candidate will be a senior communications and marketing professional and leader. This person will have the gravitas and breadth of experience to guide the public profile and messaging of a multi-layered and nuanced organization. The Deputy Director and Chief Communications Officer must bring passion and energy for the mission, as well as an understanding of a client-centered approach to communications.  Additionally, the successful candidate will have a strong team-orientation and therefore the ability to advance complex projects by collaborating closely and effectively with colleagues.

  • Experience in strategic and visual communications at a cultural, educational or other audience-focused organization, including work with media contacts.
  • A track record of success in initiating and realizing fresh approaches that challenge the norm and lead to new ways of engaging with audiences.
  • Proven leader of multidisciplinary teams that spurs high performing team to accomplish even greater achievements through clever delegation and exposing junior staff to senior decision-makers.
  • Agility, visual acuity, bold thinking, creativity and imagination linked with the capacity for crisis management.
  • Highly flexible, collaborative, responsible, and responsive work style with an ability to meet critical deadlines and manage multiple demands.
  • Effective public speaking and experience; excellent writer and editor accustomed to developing content for different constituencies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal/social interaction/consensus-building skills; demonstrated superior presentation and communication skills.
  • Empathetic and calm with sage wisdom; a good listener.
  • Organizational and analytical skills including the ability to develop and manage budgets.

EDUCATION AND TRAVEL: Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or related field required. Advanced degree preferred. International travel expected.
