THE OPPORTUNITY

Do you spend hours on Pinterest searching for thrilling lesson plan ideas? Do your colleagues come to you for advice on how to teach according to the Next Generation Science Standards? Do you love to make challenging science and engineering concepts come to life in exciting, engaging ways? If so, you might be the perfect associate editor of education for Scholastic's STEAM magazines: Science World (grades 6-10), SuperScience (grades 3-6), Science Spin (grades 3-6), Scholastic Math (grades 6-9), DynaMath (grades 3-5), and Scholastic Art (grades 7-12). These publications use a mix of current events and attention-grabbing stories to make connections to what students are learning in school.

 

We are looking to hire an associate editor with a passion for making science relevant and accessible to every student. The ideal candidate should have at least two years of teaching experience in a middle or upper-elementary classroom. He or she must be able to enthusiastically communicate with teachers and students. He or she will also be responsible for presenting at national teacher conferences.

 

This job requires a highly organized individual with keen attention to detail. This is a highly collaborative work environment; the right candidate will be able to fluently express him or herself during discussions with coworkers and in a group setting. He or she will also work closely with the education editor for Scholastic’s STEAM magazines to ensure that our STEAM titles have a shared strategy and cohesive messaging.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Oversee the ideation of the science magazines' Teacher’s Guides and online teaching materials

  • Assign teaching materials to freelance writers

  • Work with the editorial team to finesse teaching materials so they best support the NGSS
  • Organize and deliver conference presentations and professional development webinars
  • Oversee the production of bi-annual surveys for our teacher subscribers and issue-by-issue surveys for our panel of teacher advisors
  • Oversee the magazines' digital outreach, including social media, blog posts, and eNewsletters
  • Organize class visits, Skype sessions, and phone calls between the magazine editors and teachers to ensure that the STEAM magazines are helping educators achieve their teaching goals 

 

HOW YOU CAN FIT

  • Bachelor's degree in science and/or science education

  • At least 2 years of teaching experience; middle or upper-elementary science teaching experience preferred 

  • Experience creating educational materials that align to the Next Generation Science Standards, preferably for an educational publishing company

  • Excellent attention to detail, process, and organization

  • Enthusiasm and interest in teaching science and engineering concepts precisely and accurately

  • Strong public-speaking skills

  • Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards, and familiarity with various state science standards

  • Ability to take initiative and work under tight deadlines

  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.

  • Knowledge of SurveyMonkey is a plus
