The Smithsonian Institution has an immediate opening for a Digital Audience and Content Coordinator skilled in crafting multimedia content on multiple digital platforms for general and targeted audiences. This position is in the central Office of Public Affairs (OPA), which is part of the Office of Communications and External Affairs. The Office of Public Affairs serves as the Smithsonian’s storytellers, broadening access to the Smithsonian’s experts, collections, programs, research and exhibitions.
This position performs various content-related functions to support the Smithsonian’s American Women’s History Initiative (AWHI) and other projects in OPA. The Initiative is a pan-Smithsonian project to illuminate women’s pivotal roles in building and sustaining the United States. With a digital-first mission and focus, the Initiative uses technology to amplify a diversity of women's voices—not in one gallery or museum, but throughout the Smithsonian's many museums, research centers, and multiple online spaces. The position will ensure Smithsonian content and digital resources reach and serve the needs of AWHI target audiences.
The successful candidate will be an early- to mid-career digital content writer and coordinator with a proven track record in writing for and reaching diverse audiences. The successful candidate will have experience contributing to, and adhering to, audience style guides to ensure accessibility of digital content. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with scholars and education staff in the arts, history, science and culture, and translate that content for non-scholarly audiences. The successful candidate must demonstrate experience working across multiple platforms, including the internet, intranet, public social media and crowdsourcing platforms, and e-newsletters.
This person is required to work on-site in the Smithsonian’s central Office of Public Affairs in Washington, D.C. Hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. This is not a federal position. Compensation is comparable to federal pay grade, Grade 9.
- Develop and implement digital content strategy plans for AWHI and other OPA projects with supervisor’s direction.
- Coordinate with multiple Smithsonian staff across the Smithsonian to assemble content relevant to AWHI and other OPA projects. Collect, prepare, edit and publish text, multimedia and other content for a variety of platforms; evaluate the success of various content.
- Create and prepare multimedia content to be published on social media accounts by researching, drafting, editing, verifying and scheduling content in collaboration with Smithsonian social media managers. Review new content and edit to adhere to branding and audience guidelines.
- Develop AWHI target audience guides. Monitor the digital conversation to inform and amend audience guides. Assist the AWHI Marketing Committee to conduct a digital audience research study to identify key attributes of target audiences.
- Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of your work by developing and maintaining positive working relationships, ensuring that colleagues are treated fairly and with respect/dignity; and actively contributing to developments that support widening access, inclusion and diversity.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field required.
- At least two years of experience successfully developing multimedia content and content strategies for digital platforms.
- Knowledge of digital media, including the evolving use of technology for museums or other nonprofit organizations for education, outreach, program promotion and community engagement.
- Knowledge of social media platforms, principles, practices and methods to plan, execute and monitor social, digital media platforms and campaigns.
- Ability to gather and analyze web and social media statistics and information to evaluate outreach effectiveness.
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Ability to communicate complex topics in a clear, friendly voice for a variety of audiences. Proven experience developing written and visual materials for the web.
- Skilled in communicating orally to a variety of internal and external audiences.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Skilled in using Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and CMS systems including Drupal and WordPress.
- Pre-employment Background Investigation must be successfully completed.
- Proof of authorization to work in the U.S.
- Must be able to travel and work independently and a team environment.
