Responsibilities
NBC News Digital seeks an exceptional news reporter with at least 5-7 years of experience to join its team in Los Angeles. The successful candidate will be an ambitious, well-rounded, journalist who can comfortably and efficiently juggle multiple editorial tasks in a breaking-news environment and pitch and report stories that are original, sharp and distinct. The right candidate will be versatile enough to work in two capacities. For three days during the week, you will be expected to pitch, report and write original stories or bounces off news and events that spark public conversation. We expect these stories to empower our readers to be a part of that public conversation. We want someone to write stories that our audience will want to talk to their family and friends about and will remember a month after they are published. You will also be expected to work two weekend night shifts to cover breaking news. This role requires quick, accurate writing and a competitive spirit to get news to our audience ahead of the pack. The ability to write focused, clean copy on tight deadline is a must. An interest in video and alternative storytelling techniques, including data visualization, is a plus. Fluency in SEO, social-media and basic analytics is required.

Job Duties
  • Generate original story ideas and develop fresh angles and follow-up pieces for the big stories of the day
  • Pitch ideas that have broad appeal and impact for a national audience
  • Work with News, Enterprise, Special Projects and Planning Editors of NBCNews.com in Los Angeles and New York to get story ideas focused and approved
  • Share information with broader NBC News network in a timely fashion
  • Actively monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, wires, internal communications, political websites) and be prepared to jump on news seconds after it happens
  • Writing clean, fast and accurate copy, headlines, and photo and video captions.
  • Communicating with a team of other reporters and editors
  • Make full use of the range of NBC News resources, including network newsgathering and multimedia
  • Collaborate with original video team to develop engaging media elements for big stories and projects
  • Travel when necessary to get enterprise stories fully reported
  • Work with data and graphics editors to develop additional elements that enrich your stories and add context


  • Basic Qualifications
    • 2+ years of experience writing for a major news organization
    • Strong ability to write news and feature stories
    • Proven experience gathering and analyzing information about newsworthy events
    • Expertise writing SEO headlines
    • Ability to evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas
    • Must have the desire to work in a creative, demanding, competitive environment.
