And there’s no news organization that tells Hudson County’s stories better, in print and on the web, than The Jersey Journal. If you’re looking for a great place to grow and succeed as a reporter, then we’re looking for you.

We have an immediate opening for a general assignment reporter – someone who can cover a parade on Sunday, produce a compelling feature about a “dreamer” headed to college on Monday, and then turn an investigative story about dangerous road conditions for the weekend. The successful candidate will be comfortable producing both snap updates on breaking news and thoughtful content on high-interest topics that engages readers with depth and originality.

This position is based in The Journal’s main office in Secaucus, N.J., but will be expected to travel throughout Hudson County and northern New Jersey as the news demands. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, and be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekend, holiday, and evening shifts. The regular work schedule for this position is Sunday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with occasional evening assignments.

Published six days a week, Monday through Saturday, The Journal is the only daily news organization located in New Jersey’s most densely populated county, which is situated immediately across the Hudson River from Manhattan (our offices have a spectacular view of the New York skyline). Founded in 1867, we’ve been part of the Advance Publications family for more than seven decades.

Required education, experience, and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications or related field required
  • Minimum two years’ journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing required, preferably in a professional news organization
  • Clips from established publications and/or web sites that demonstrate solid reporting, writing, and organizational skills required
  • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
  • Experience using social media to source and promote content
  • Demonstrated capability in capitalizing on high-value topics by engaging audiences in frequency and urgency
  • Able to build, maintain, and engage an active audience on multiple print and digital platforms simultaneously
  • Proven ability to build relationships with sources to deliver exclusive content that differentiates The Journal from its competitors
  • Comfortable with the tools and technology that power a digital-first news organization, such as Microsoft Office and the Arc publishing system
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Experience with digital photography, videography, and/or audio is a plus
  • Bi-lingual abilities are a plus, preferably English/Spanish

  • Provide first and best coverage of important community news.
  • Gather information and prepare high-value content for all media platforms, print and digital.
  • Follow sound journalistic principles: balanced and factual, timely and topical, well-sourced and contextually correct.
  • Meet production deadlines as assigned.
  • File incremental posts to digital platforms as breaking stories evolve.
  • Monitor audience interest and posts from the community on story topics. Engage with readers in social media and comments as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain a strong collaborative relationship with supervising editors.
  • Learn and use The Journal’s systems for digital-first production and engagement.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the diverse heritage, backgrounds, and points of view in The Journal’s community.
  • Understand and use hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for direct-to-web production and engagement, including but not limited to:
  • posting photographs and short videos to the web and any internal production systems
  • remote web reporting, using laptops and smart phones
