Prism, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate of Daily Kos, is a new nonprofit created to elevate stories, ideas, and solutions from people whose voices are critical to a reflective democracy. The organization will bring sustained awareness to issues like voting rights, criminal justice, and climate justice. Its journalists and fellows will drive national exposure for diverse voices, showcase unique ideas, lift up underrepresented voices, and bring innovative solutions to the forefront. We leverage Daily Kos’s unparalleled reach to educate a growing progressive readership using multiple channels, including in-depth reporting, personal storytelling, profiles, podcasts, and video.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Director should be a highly-driven executive. The Director will manage the critical pieces of building this nonprofit organization and its team, ​leading initiatives for our end-to-end Marketing & Communications program. Responsibilities will include managing website development and integration with our tandem website, Daily Kos, event planning, designing and implementing a communications and social media plan, and overseeing our brand development process. The ideal candidate will be proactive and solutions-oriented, able to work in a fast-paced environment and ready to amplify our work through both traditional and innovative means.

Although we have offices in Oakland, California and Washington, D.C., we are a remote team.

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive and creative communications plan for Prism’s roll-out

  • Produce on-point messaging and language for public-facing events (including remarks)

  • Use innovative strategies and multiple media channels to reach and retain a significant audience

  • Draw on relationships with journalists and other influencers—from local to national—to help Prism broaden its audience and its impact

  • Train staff and fellows for radio, podcast, and television appearances

  • Handle all media inquiries directed at Prism staff and fellows (when Prism affiliation will be featured)

  • Help turn Prism fellows into household names by proactively pitching and booking fellows to provide commentary on national issues/events

Website Development

  • Manage Prism website development and web developer

  • Ensure partners and allies are able to easily use our site to find stories, videos, photos and other related content

  • Measure metrics such as website activity and snap polling with Civiqs

Social Media Development

  • Expand and manage our social media presence and exposure in collaboration with the Social Media Manager and our distribution website​ ( and other partners

  • Integrate social media communications and marketing, utilizing social media from fellows, senior reporters, and staff

  • Work with Managing Editor to push out story arcs and narratives on social media

Events Management

  • Work with our event consultants to manage our annual pop-up events celebrating our story arcs, writers, leaders, and activists

  • Develop and direct ad hoc events taking advantage of current hooks and opportunities to promote our brand and work

  • Document events and promote broadly via social media and website

Partnership Management

  • Work with Executive Director and Managing Editor to build a strong network of partners and allies for story development, events and social media work

  • Ensure high touch with partners and allies via intentional communication, in particular regarding funds raised or other benefits generated to partners via story development and social media

  • Work closely with Senior Fellows to amplify their presence across media channels. This includes one-on-one communications counseling for each Fellow, as well as tracking a metrics across multiple channels to ensure steady increase in visibility and share of voice



  • Have significant communications experience and a strong interest in building a more reflective democracy through story-telling

  • Active, established voice on social media, primarily Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook

  • Efficient, well organized, able to think “social and digital first” ensuring that content is engaging and shareable

  • Ability to work with and oversee communications consultants, such as website developers, videographers, etc

  • Collaborative team player

  • Sufficiently flexible and knowledgeable about the online production process

  • Event planning experience

  • Innovative, creative, and accountable



Prism offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and a comprehensive, progressive benefit program to attract, retain and motivate a high-performing and dedicated workforce. Starting salary will be between $80-100K.
