Director, Digital and On-Air Fundraising Programming

Status:  Full time/Regular/Exempt


The Director, Digital and On-Air Fundraising Programming assists the VP with the oversight and to implement the overall direction of Fundraising Programming for PBS with a strong focus on digital fundraising and digital incentives. Create strategies to compliment broadcast programming and advance them to digital platforms.  Manages the process of physical and digital products and incentives to help generate donations. Additionally, assist in the management and supervision of PFP content as it relates to other business units within PBS.


Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist Vice President and Senior Director on proposal screening and evaluation to determine what will be distributed to PBS stations during national on-air fundraising campaigns.
  • Evaluate programming and recommend the best course of action to leverage them on digital platforms, specifically for contributions.
  • Create digital fundraising tests for stations, planning logistics, creating assets and developing metrics.
  • Researches availability of unique incentives and marketing and opportunities to be offered for fundraising, including new on-line and digital distribution opportunities.
  • Compiles and disseminates detailed incentive information for each pledge program, including descriptions, product images, delivery schedules, premium suppliers and distributors.  Ensures that all premium offers and premium spreadsheets are updated in myPBS forums and archived in myPBS.
  • Secures and distributes product samples and images for station use.
  • In conjunction with other Directors, serve as point-person for all PFP producers on their digital footprint.
  • Once assigned a program for broadcast, work directly with Producers to evaluate and oversee the development and packaging of their productions, which includes educating producers on PBS technical requirements and policies.
  • Evaluate and approve program rough cuts, pledge breaks and scripting (as well as other materials as needed) prior to program submission, and then evaluate final programs to ensure accuracy into any content changes and technical specifications. 
  • Keep Vice President informed and updated of all matters surrounding production, packaging and delivery of FRP programming (including potential issues/problems). Work closely with PBS Scheduling, Program Management, Program Operations, Media Relations (and other departments as necessary) to update on PFP Pipeline as well as oversee program packaging, screening, editing, and delivery to PBS.
  • Produce and create on-air promotional spots (as needed) for PFP programs.
  • Produce and create all materials published to PBS stations to support PFP programs (including but not limited to PFP Guides, feed schedules, rundowns, previews, and the packaging of tool box content reels).
  • Produce and Direct PFP teleconferences four times a year which includes (but is not limited to) creating scripts for VP and Senior Director, creating clip reel of upcoming PFP programming, and providing technical support during feeds.
  • Review, track and approve invoices related to PFP programming in accordance to contract specifications.
  • Prepare and produce content, clip reels, and materials necessary to promote Fundraising Programming for PBS conferences and outside meetings.
  • When assigned, represent Vice President and Senior Director at meetings within and outside of PBS.

Other areas of focus:

  • Ensures a smooth-running operation that provides essential services to stations with an emphasis on customer service to public television stations, program producers and premium and ticket vendors.
  • In coordination with program producers and Fundraising Programming management, establishes giving levels for each program.
  • Proactively monitors and responds to public television stations’ emails and questions posted on myPBS.
  • Acts as liaison for Fundraising Programming with performance artists and agents/tour promoters and PBS member stations.
  • Markets ticket opportunities to PBS member stations.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements for success:

    • Bachelor's degree in television, marketing, communications or related fields, or equivalent work experience.
    • 4 + years of experience working in communications, television or related area required.
    • Experience working with promotional elements and on-air spots a plus.
    • Knowledge in development, on-air fundraising, programming and production preferred.
    • Experience or familiarity with Digital Fundraising techniques.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook).
    • Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
    • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to make sound judgments overall.
    • Strong customer service skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals and personality types.
