The New Republic seeks a deputy editor to launch and supervise a web vertical devoted to the intersection of class inequality and identity in American politics. For too long, these critical areas of social concern have been treated in hermetic isolation from each other, and indeed positioned as subjects of false or misleading zero-sum trade-offs within liberal political discourse. We are looking for an experienced, enterprising editor to shape coverage that highlights the convergence, rather than the schematic opposition, of the quests for full recognition of difference and the fight to reduce the savage inequalities of the American political economy. The ideal candidate should have a firm grounding in digital journalism, as well as in the broader history and interplay of difference, discrimination, and economic justice in American politics.

While the editor will collaborate with others across the newsroom, we’re looking for someone who will work this vertical autonomously, reporting to both the executive editor and digital director. The editor should be expected to edit around seven pieces a week, supervising at least 1 staff writer and several freelancers. The editor should be full of story ideas—including partnership ideas—and understand how to inspire and mentor writers, and know how to grow this beat into something even larger in the coming years.

Applicants should have a minimum of five years editing experience and possess a rich network of writers. Those with writing experience, ideally for a general-interest audience, are preferred. All applicants should have experience promoting their work on social media and through other channels as well, such as personal email newsletters and TV/radio interviews.

To apply, please submit your résumé and a cover letter explaining why you’re right for this job. The cover letter should be tailored to the position and show an understanding of the magazine’s sensibility and history; only applications with cover letters will be considered. Please include at least three references, as well as links to five articles you’ve edited.

The New Republic offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits. We are committed to diversity and encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with criminal records, veterans, and people with disabilities.

This is a non-Guild job and is open to internal and external candidates.
