Role Summary


The New Growth & Development organization is focused on identifying and analyzing areas of future growth and plans to achieve sustained and balance growth across the enterprise. The organization works to answer "what's next" for Cox and our customers. We develop growth hypothesis and test those hypothesis through: 1) skunkworks 2) investing in new businesses 3) traditional R&D 4) identifying strategic partnerships and 5) exploring emerging businesses. Growth opportunities are currently being incubated across a variety of adjacent business and technology sectors including Healthcare, Commercial IOT, Energy, Edge Computing, etc.


This role is responsible for growth opportunity incubation and innovation tied to the commercialization of new business opportunities within the Resources/Utilities industry. This Executive Director will report to the Vice President of New Growth and Development and be required to present and interact with senior leadership of Cox Communications and across the wider enterprise.


  • Identify and evaluate new growth opportunities aligned with business unit strategy
  • Research and assess emerging market opportunities
  • Build financial models and business cases
  • Conduct in-depth financial analysis (e.g., value chain, monetization models)
  • Develop business concepts, financial assumptions & uncertainties, and operational plans for new business opportunities
  • Play integral role in the incubation and launch of specific new business opportunities, some of which may be associated with a joint venture and/or strategic partnership(s)
  • Identify and assess development, investment, partnership and acquisition opportunities
  • Conduct due diligence, manage negotiations, and oversee post-deal integrations
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Support the process to analyze the market, products, competitive solutions, and technology trends to identify top new growth opportunities for Utilities/Resources
  • Drive business development efforts, including identification of strategic partners and solution vendors and incubation of specific offerings aligned Cox’s growth strategy.  Responsible for the performance of such initiative(s), including strategic, operational and financial aspects
  • Manage day-to-day interactions with strategic partners and/or solution vendors associated with such initiative(s)
  • Work closely with a cross-functional team including product, finance, legal, technology, marketing, operations, and others while incubating such initiative(s)
  • Provide leadership in developing Cox’s alliances, partnerships and industry relationships to maintain Cox’s position as a respected thought leader in the industry and understand and articulate trends and implications for our business



Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree in related field
  • 10 or more years of experience required in related field(s)
  • Requires demonstrated ability to think strategically and execute tactically to develop and launch growth solutions that support our strategic vision
  • Extensive business development experience, including deal creation, execution and commercialization
  • Extensive experience in start-up businesses and/or end-to-end product development experience, with entrepreneurial spirit
  • Proven ability to successfully manage large, diverse technical and business teams both internally and externally (planning, budgeting, operations, compliance, human resources) using a collaborative leadership style
  • Proven ability to structure and negotiate complex business agreements addressing technology, operational, intellectual property, and policy matters
  • Business understanding and working knowledge of the telecommunications industry, systems, and networks, as well as, current and emerging technologies and standards is very beneficial
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required in addition to excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong and demonstrable project management experience and large team facilitation skills required
  • Willingness to travel
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, presentation, and collaborative skills to work effectively with teams throughout organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in strategy consulting, investment banking, venture/entrepreneur
  • MBA, JD, CPA or equivalent and 15 years related experience preferred
  • 5 or more years of experience in a management role preferred
  • Understanding of the Energy industry (specifically key growth segments including Smart Grid and Energy Management)
  • Experience in utilities, telecommunications or technology industry desired
