Role Summary


 

The New Growth & Development organization is focused on identifying and analyzing areas of future growth and plans to achieve sustained and balance growth across the enterprise. The organization works to answer "what's next" for Cox and our customers. We develop growth hypothesis and test those hypothesis through: 1) skunkworks 2) investing in new businesses 3) traditional R&D 4) identifying strategic partnerships and 5) exploring emerging businesses. Growth opportunities are currently being incubated across a variety of adjacent business and technology sectors including Healthcare, Commercial IOT, Energy, Edge Computing, etc.

 

This role is responsible for the strategic business development for new sources of growth for the company while building industry leading competencies, approaches, and processes to make that a recurring capability. In this role, you will identify high-potential companies and opportunities based on both signals (“what’s trending?”) and theses (“what do we believe will happen in a specific market?”). In addition, you will contribute to the diligence and decision process, collaborate with the rest of the New Growth and Corporate Development team, and interact with our portfolio companies to ensure the success of our partnerships and investments.

 

  • Focusing on results and collaborating cross functionally, this leader will be responsible for bringing new growth opportunities to fruition
  • Perform on-going analysis of trends & conduct broad strategic assessment of growth initiatives for CCI new growth team to incubate
  • Identify and evaluate new growth opportunities
  • Develop business, financial, and operational plans for new business opportunities
  • Establish and maintain New Growth and Development partnership role with Cox stakeholders and Cox Enterprise executives.
  • Identify and assess development, investment, and partnership opportunities
  • Lead business development function with external partners – targeting potential new business partnerships and alliances to work with Cox New Growth & Development teams on building adjacent growth opportunities
  • Conduct due diligence, manage partnership negotiations, and oversee external relationships
Responsibilities:

  • Find interesting companies and projects: Build and continuously update a set of companies to meet and projects to follow based on qualitative and quantitative signals, market theses, and a network of key relationships
  • Identify what metrics are relevant, develop predictions about how specific markets are evolving, and track activity in the industry ecosystem
  • Evaluate prospective investments: Assist in diligence efforts for specific companies we are considering investing in, or an entire category of startups we are evaluating
  • Capture key assumptions and critical uncertainties during pitches, checking references, analyzing metrics (in concert with our M&A team), creating market maps, and other tasks related to evaluating a potential investment.
  • Cultivate a network of subject matter experts: Nurture and maintain relationships with influential people in Healthcare, Edge Computing, Utilities, and IOT in order to both source deals as well as solicit expert input on a given topic. This could include prominent executives and operators working in growth verticals as well as academic researchers focused on a specific technology
  • Ad hoc research: Perform business and technology research on markets, companies, and trends in growth verticals that Cox is interested in
  • Lead the business development effort to identify new growth initiatives and partners whom which to develop new business initiatives for the company
  • Provide leadership in developing Cox’s alliances, partnerships and industry relationships to maintain Cox’s position as a respected thought leader in the industry and understand and articulate trends and implications for our business
  • Support the process to analyze emerging and adjacent market, product, competitive, and technology trends to identify new growth opportunities
  • Develop and maintain the portfolio(s) of adjacent growth opportunities driving towards revenue opportunities
  • Define, implement, and manage a new growth process to identify, evaluate, build, and launch new opportunities through the product innovation pipeline
Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • BS/BA degree in related field
  • 10-15+ years of experience required in related field(s)
  • Extensive business development experience, including deal creation, execution and commercialization
  • Genuine intellectual curiosity, ability to learn new facts and concepts quickly and comprehensively, and to synthesize and communicate effectively to others in both verbal and written forms
  • Strong team player and ability to collaborate with colleagues, navigate relationships in growth verticals and the broader technology ecosystem, and ensure that entrepreneurs have an excellent experience engaging with Cox
  • Ability to operate independently to navigate tight deadlines, juggle a long list of competing priorities, and operate in a dynamic environment without compromising sharp attention to detail
  • Intellectual horsepower, desire and proven ability to learn new domains and technologies quickly, energetic “can-do” attitude and commitment to excellence
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required in addition to excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong and demonstrable project management experience and large team facilitation skills required
  • Requires demonstrated ability to think strategically and execute tactically to develop and launch growth solutions that support our strategic vision
  • Willingness to travel
Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • MBA, JD, CPA or equivalent and at least 15 years related experience
  • Experience within Venture Capital or Private Equity funding
  • Working in a variety of high-tech, finance, or fintech companies as a consultant, analyst, product manager, data scientist, or software engineer
  • Extensive experience in start-up businesses and/or end-to-end new product development experience, with entrepreneurial spirit
  • Proven ability to successfully manage large, diverse technical and business teams both internally and externally (planning, budgeting, operations, compliance, human resources) using a collaborative leadership style
  • Proven ability to structure and negotiate complex business agreements addressing technology, operational, intellectual property, and policy matters
  • Business understanding and working knowledge of the cable /communication industry, systems, and networks, as well as, current and emerging technologies and standards is very beneficial
  • Understanding of related industries in the ecosystem and how they impact the communications industry, e.g., high tech, CE, etc.
