The Southern Poverty Law Center seeks a highly-skilled Digital Director with a proven track record of success leading online strategies — including email, social and web — for major brands, national nonprofits, government agencies or political candidates.

Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Digital Director will lead a team of email strategists, social media strategists and web producers to elevate the organization’s legal, legislative, and programmatic work, including issue areas focused on hate and extremism, immigrant rights, criminal justice reform, economic justice, children’s rights and voting rights.

The Digital Director will work collaboratively with directors across the Communications and Creative departments and colleagues in legal and programs to develop digital campaigns and leverage cutting-edge tactics to help shape public discourse and bring victories to the communities that the organizations serves.

The incumbent must be able to juggle multiple projects, manage a digital team working on hundreds of initiatives at any given time and collaborate effectively with team members at all levels of the organization in a fast-paced environment.

This posting is for one position that can be located in either Montgomery, AL or Washington D.C.  

Primary Job Functions:

  • Providing vision and direction for SPLC’s digital communications, ensuring that content supports SPLC’s litigation, education and advocacy strategies;
  • Evaluating emerging technology for adoption by SPLC;
  • Grow SPLC’s social and web presence and audiences;
  • Developing and implementing SPLC social media strategy;
  • Developing online ad strategies, including creating concepts and content, that elevate brands and help shape public discourse;
  • Managing organization-wide web projects;
  • Working with departmental directors, including the Design and IT directors, managers and staff to ensure a dynamic web presence;
  • Analyzing SPLC’s web traffic and measuring the impact of SPLC’s web presence;
  • Managing and overseeing digital vendors, including ad buyers, social strategists, and web consultant.

Qualifications –

Related Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years digital work experience, with an emphasis in either agency, in-house or nonprofit;
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing a team of more than a half-dozen staff members;
  • Track record of leveraging digital strategies to elevate an organization, political candidate, or cause; 
  • Proven ability leading initiatives and working across teams to design comprehensive digital campaigns that shape public discourse;
  • Substantial experience:
    • Designing and leading email strategies/campaigns;
    • Designing and leading social networking strategies/campaigns;
    • Overseeing and developing websites and web producers;
  • Track record of drafting effective content that engages and mobilizes target audiences through ads, emails, social, web and other online strategies.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Exceptional communications skills, including clear, concise writing and ability to frame complex issues for supporters and public;
  • Exceptional editing and writing skills, including ad, email, social and web content;
  • Ability to coach and support senior leaders as thought leaders via social platforms;
  • HTML and image-editing skills;
  • Fluency in SEO concepts;
  • Google Analytics and other measurement tools;
  • CMS experience including WordPress and Drupal;
  • Experience with copyediting and use of style guidelines;
  • Knowledge of web analytics; experience creating information dashboards;
  • Familiarity with online marketing systems like Blackbaud and Convio;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
