Position Title: Production Manager
Reports to: Senior Production Manager
Status: Part-Time or Freelance

Aperture seeks a Part-time Production Manager (up to 24 hours per week) to work with the Senior Production Manager and work scholar in the manufacturing of its books (frontlist and backlist reprints), as well as the Aperture catalogue and The PhotoBook Review (both produced twice yearly). The Part-time Production Manager maintains Aperture’s reputation for the highest-quality photography reproduction in print. The candidate will be a team player, who has strong technical experience in both photography and printing. Bookmaking experience is a plus.


  • Managing file preparation for books, catalogues, and The PhotoBook Review, ensuring balance of fidelity to artist’s original prints alongside Aperture’s house standards and processes

  • Overseeing color proofing and correction (Senior Production Manager will handle coordinating proof reviews with editor, author, designer, and prep house for each title)

  • Managing prep-house relationships, including the confirmation of specs and file requirements, with prep-houses and printers

  • Managing master press files and quickly providing materials to support needs of press and publicity

  • Handling and organizing physical prints, sample materials, and books, as needed

  • Reviewing, correcting, and finalizing book design files, as needed, and creating print-ready PDFs

  • Creating varnish files and communicating with printing details and Aperture requirements with

    prep-house and printer, including line screen and type of printing, prior to release of materials

  • Maintaining archive of high-resolution image files, design files, PDFs, and reference files for all

    print projects

  • Working with work scholars to manage the still-life studio photography of books to be used in our catalogue, The PhotoBook Review, online, and elsewhere

  • Participating in the weekly production meeting, making sure any schedule issues are discussed

  • Working closely with the Senior Production Manager on all aspects of the job, including training the production work scholar

Other required tasks and skills include:

  • Working directly with Managing Editor to finalize catalogue files, blads, and other sales materials before releasing to print
  • Assisting other departments, including handling the file prep and printing of limited-edition fine- art prints, producing prints for Aperture exhibitions, gathering images from the current issue of Aperture magazine for marketing, creating digital magazine edition files, and supplying files as needed for publicity and marketing of books and the magazine.


  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 5+ years comparable work experience (on-press supervision experience a plus)

  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat (experience working in Excel a plus)

  • Experience and confidence in providing detailed CMYK and duotone/tritone color correction instructions

  • Good understanding of and experience working with offset printers, both domestic and international

  • Experience working in photography

  • Excellent organizational skills, with ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines

    and desire to step in and help when needed

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work in team environment, with artists and all levels of staff

  • Passion for photography

  • Love of books and bookmaking
