Media Relations Specialist

The Media Relations Specialist works closely with journalists around the world to create, implement and coordinate media stories that highlight the organization, its leadership and mission. The Specialist will supervise a media relations manager, help manage a public relations firm, and collaborate across the organization to identify and develop story ideas that convey Conservation International’s accomplishments and thought leadership. S/he will report to the Vice President, Media.

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Researching and writing press releases and managing the flow of announcements coming out of the organization.
  • Leading press efforts around news events including breaking news, UN negotiations, and international conferences, including drafting and releasing timely media statements.
  • Conducting research and working collaboratively across the organization to develop story ideas and pitches about Conservation International’s work.
  • Building and maintaining positive, service-oriented working relationships with journalists. If needed, acting as a media spokesperson on behalf of the organization.
  • Researching and writing briefing materials.
  • Collaborating with and serving as the point of contact for Conservation International’s regional communicators across our four field divisions - Americas, Asia-Pacific, Greater China and Africa.


Media placements, News planning & Media strategy: Develop, write and pitch news releases and story ideas. Write and distribute statements in response to news events. Gather and develop story ideas for media placement.  Identify news opportunities for leadership and develop briefings and talking points as needed. Work with other organizational communicators to support strategic initiatives and news moments, which may be a combination of events, produced reports or papers, marketing campaigns, or field projects. Approve timing and distribution strategy of news outreach across the institution to maintain coordination of output and manage risks. 

Crisis communications response strategy: If needed, assist with the creation and execution of crisis communication plans, working closely with senior leadership and relevant field teams to gather facts, develop statements, and assist/coach colleagues in communicating responses to key stakeholders including staff and donors.

Promotion of senior staff thought-leadership: Oversee the development and implementation a media strategy for securing high profile placements that are designed to raise the profile and awareness of Conservation International’s senior leaders, including placing opinion/editorial essays in targeted media & online outlets. Provide media training and coaching as needed.

Monitoring, Measuring, Cataloging: Oversee the management of a media monitoring system of Conservation International’s news coverage that will assess media placements. Advise on daily, weekly and quarterly reporting of  media coverage, as well as reports for specific campaigns.


This position is based in Arlington, VA. Up to 30% domestic or international travel may be required to conduct news gathering, meet and/or accompany journalists and attend international conferences. 



Bachelor's Degree. 7+ years experience working with the news media and established contacts with national print, broadcast, online media outlets. Must be an excellent and prolific writer with strong strategic planning and verbal communication skills and a proven track record of successful high-profile media campaigns in the U.S., Europe and other international markets.


Experience and knowledge of environmental issues (i.e., climate, businesses & sustainability, extractives, agriculture, biodiversity, etc.) and an ability to communicate complex science or policy information to mainstream audiences.
