NBC News Digital seeks a talented politics editor to join its team, with a focus on the 2020 election cycle. The position is based in New York. The work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday, from 3 p.m.-midnight on Tuesday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday.
The successful candidate will be an ambitious, well-rounded journalist with several years of political editing experience. Having covered a previous presidential campaign cycle is a plus. The position emphasizes handling 2020 campaign stories, but also may include the White House, Congress, federal agencies and other politics and governmental coverage.
The politics editor will work closely with the senior politics editor in New York and other politics and news editors in New York and Washington, with teams of political reporters in New York and Washington, and with NBC’s extensive resources on its network and cable platforms.
The politics editor will be responsible for spot/breaking news.
For breaking news, the politics editor will have the ability to craft alerts in minutes and publish short stories quickly; have a keen eye for ledes and the skill to write sharp headlines fast; know how to build out a story rapidly after first publication; and have a keen radar for spotting breaking political news and emerging story lines.
Play a major role in NBC News.com’s coverage of the 2020 election cycle.
Work with politics reporters in Washington and New York to support their reporting and help make their stories better.
Become an integral member of a team of politics and news editors in New York and D.C.
Handle breaking news and generate original story ideas and develop fresh angles for the big stories of the day.
Ensure the tone of and mix of stories is in line with NBC News Digital editorial strategy, and the voice and standards of NBC News Digital.
• An understanding of national campaigns and elections, including primaries and caucuses, debates and conventions, is a must. Planning and organizational skills are helpful; live blogging experience is a plus.
• Experience working with photo, video, data visualization, SEO, analytics, social and other digital departments.
• The ability to work fast and error free with grace under pressure. Multi-tasking required.
• 4 plus years of editing experience, some or all of it in politics.
